New 500 HO owner
« on: December 10, 2016, 08:16:30 AM »
Good Morning.....

Just got my new 500 HO this past week, and it's turning into a great machine.  I was happy to find this forum and some good info, which helped me out right away.  As quite a few on here mentioned, I also had the same low speed driving issue.  Honestly, the first time or two on the quad was simply not fun, and had me second guessing the purchase, despite all the other good things.  But based on info found here, I simply adjusted the idle speed adjustment screw and everything works great.  It did take a few adjustments to get it set perfectly, but now it's running great, low speed driving is like any other quad out there, and it's very smooth.  I'm not sure why they come set at approximately 1700 RPM when the service manual (found again thanks to this forum) clearly states idle RPM should be ~1400.  Either way, that simple adjustment seems to have fixed everything without having to take it in or have the TPS changed.

I also just added (Pics to follow) the Rival full underside body armor.  The plates are 4mm thick, and fit perfectly.  It is certainly much more protected than the OEM plastic.  the armor came really quick, as the distributor is just over in New Jersey.  My biggest concern (although un-tested yet) will be the addition of a plow with the armor on, as I can't really access the frame directly now.  I picked up the Kolpin X Factor plow (on sale at Cabela's for $299), and it has a generic multi-fit base plate.  There are multiple holes which appear will work in order to secure it, but again, I haven't actually opened the plow kit yet and haven't matched up the base to see what will work or not.  If anyone has added a plow in addition to the armor, any help would be appreciated.

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to this quad.  With my biggest concern quickly remedied, I think it's going to be everything I was looking for and more.  Plus the dealer is local, so that will also make life a little easier.

Ride safe!

I guess I'll be trying this Idle screw adjustment, because my new 2016 is doing the same thing and we just started riding it to break-in, and I noticed its idled at 1700rpms and does the same as what others are describing on low speed. Hope it works for me also.

In the cool on initial start up it should ramp to 1700rpm, when warm idle around 1450-1550 no more.
Be careful when backing the idle screw. Little go's a long way. And make sure it at running temp.
If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

Checked it out and mine is Idling around the correct RPMs. I didn't bother checking for the Idle screw. What side is it located on and do I have to take off alot of plastics to get to it?

Right side, behind the exhaust, yes you will need to remove plastic.
