engine braking
« on: July 22, 2020, 01:07:25 PM »
does anyone know of a softer,or less aggressive one way bearing that can be changed out with the original engine brake one way bearing, works great at high speed but a real pain at low speed on the rough trails

Which machine are we talking here?

No such thing as a "soft" one way bearing. They are not designed for any give at all.

I personally LOVE the engine braking on my 800, particularly at slow rock crawling speeds. So much safer than using the brakes, especially on steep declines.

Its a 500HO 2 up, soft may not have been the right word, find on the slow run that its in and out type of thing, from what i see and read its the way its suppose to be, just wondering if anyone came across something that was a little less aggressive, thanks

Once one understands how an engine brake works one can make some changes to alter some...not all characteristics. But once the belt rotation speed matches the engine's end RPM, as in idle speed, it's disengaged. Nothing you can do about that. The clutch is disengaged and any one-way is no longer locked and starts turning the other way. You can make some changes to drive train load and ratios such as larger and heavier tires. You can change the flyweights on the primary or lessen the preload on the secondary spring to slow backshift...but that effects all aspects of operation in both directions. Not much you can do without effecting other aspects.

Hey,
thanks for your response and past along knowledge, seems things are a little more complicated than I first thought. I think i'll just learn to live it for now, it make's sense, just not for the smoothest ride at times

On my 2020 Cforce 500HO. I'm having a lot of discomfort with my engine brakes also.  I just can't go slow at all (5 to 20km/hr). It keeps jerking and braking. Did anyone else found a solution for this? Is it only my machine or are they all like this? The dealership has put in a softer spring on my clutch, it's better but still not acceptable and now it's harder to change gears. I don't think they know how to fix it. Please help me.

If they put such a soft spring in that it won't release at least 400rpm above idle, you will have a heck of a time going slow. Flip the pod over to read RPMs and watch it as you increase the throttle slowly until you feel it start to engage the belt. That should be at the very least 400 RPMs above idle. By the same token, a binding clutch...or a glazed belt will be very erratic as well. Need to pull it apart and inspect...everything.

hey Eddie, what is the RPM idle on your machine, as it turns out the problem I thought was clutching was not, it was the idle was set way to high, the was a posy on this forum about the jerky ride at low speed and to correct was an adjustment of the idle to I think about 650 but check that. I idled down my machine and all is good.

What about a different bearing? or what was the bearing before the "one way" or engine brake?

For this type of clutch setup there is only two bearing types. For those 600s and smaller its a oneway or sprag-type bearing that provides some engine braking below where the primary releases the belt to idle RPM or just an idler bearing (no oneway/sprag) for all larger engine sizes. The oneway in yours works OK until either the sprag part wears out or the bearing gets dry..which they do very often..or the gauge increases between the belt and primary sheaves. If it were mine I would pull it down and inspect it...and make it a habit to always use low range when needing to move slower then 10mph for long distances. This will keep the primary engauged and the belt off the oneway/bearing making it last much much longer.
