Ok so went for a 65km ride over the weekend and very close to the destination I shut the bike off as it was stuck in park while we were winching, then it wouldn't start again, It sounded like it wanted to, I checked the oil, relays, fuses, fuel pump. but nothing seamed to make a difference, It was raining but not very hard, and we had just gone through a small, No deeper than the belly pan water so we thought it might of gotten wet some how. So it was decided to tow it out with my sisters SXS. About 5km into towing it I again tried to start it again and it fired up.

We got it back home and have given it a good clean and a good check over and i still can't find any thing, It will be getting a oil change and diffs getting some new oil as well.

Open to suggestions as to were to look or ideas?

So it did turn over fine? Next time this happens check for spark. Might lead you to what is going on. I would just grab some DI grease and coat every harness I could find to be on the safe side. I don't like the harnesses they use. They let in too much junk and will be a problem at some point.

Yeah it did turn over fine like there was no restriction, I think you might be right there. I will get in and check it out.

Thanks

You could also try spraying it down real good and see if it will do it again. Just to be sure.

Yep, Did that too, pulled some panels off to get into the electrics and got them all wet and she fired up straight away. I have then sprayed all of it in CRC as I always do, I spray the hole machine down in CRC after its been washed after each ride and it helps to clean it next time I've found.

I guess I'm stumped. Maybe it will get worse, then you might have a chance to find the cause.

I know right, I though it might have been a over heating issue? cause that would have been the hottest it would have gotten all day.

I think your right though I will be pulling all electrical connections apart and putting so electrical grease on them to help water proofing.

Thank you Cosmosdan for your input.

Other than this issue it was a good day riding, I almost ate sh!t over a big woop I didn't see until it was to late.

Next time the unit fails to start, take seat off unplug the start relay plug (not the cables) and put back on and try to see if it fires back up?
We have a lots of reports of this issue.
If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

I did check that at the time and it was clicking but I didn't unplug it, I will keep that in mind for next time. I did however spray it with CRC once I cleaned the bike.

Thanks for the info Wheels

Wheels, what were the issues with the relay? It cranked over fine with no start. How does the relay tie in to this?

Red Dog, did you ever get a over temp light? Was your fan running? Do the fuel lines get too close to anything hot? An over heated engine doesn't like to start, but I have had hot fuel cause me problems too. Water in fuel has also been an issue after a cold night or rain. Water has yet to fix it's self for me. I have always had to add something to the fuel to get it out so I'm reaching a little there.

Some people have had starting issues because of a dodgy wiring joint at the main fuse. Might be worth a look.

We are trying to find for sure what is happening, but seems the start relay is getting crushed by the seat. For some reason by pulling the relay connection it will flash, just pulling fuse will not work, I have found it is causing the fuel pump not to activate.I'm off to try and get it to happen again.wirh the pda attached so I can data log. Will report back soon.

MM never thought of that I will look into were the fuel lines run, Although the temp never got more than 2 bars, the day time temp was about 18deg C, I think the fan kicked in once or twice, that was about it.

Thanks Murdo, i will look into that too.

That would be awesome Wheels, I will look into that too, at times when trying to start it is seamed like the fuel pump didn't activate so could be contributing to the issue.

Mine did something similar when I was riding on a cool moist morning.
Once the fog cleared, it started running like a champ. Vapor lock was my guess with the carb, but that's going old school with some old cars I've owned.

Same thing happened to me twice. On the first incident, I just cleaned the spark plug and then off it go. Then it happened again on my next trail. So i pulled out the plug again and noticed that it was wet witn gas. After cleaning, I put it back but still can't make the engine start. I found some gas coming out of the breather hose everytime I tried to crank up the ignition. I then unscrewed the gas cap to release any pressure build up and tried to start it again with gas tank open. Somehow, it worked! The engine started again. I don't know if it was just luck....
