Out for a ride this weekend and my cvt belt blew up into little pieces.  My quad is not even a year old yet (2018) and only a little over 1500 kms on it so not sure why my belt blew so soon especially the way it did - just completely exploded. I haven't contacted the dealer yet but i'm assuming this is something not covered under warranty.  Why would this have happened so soon with only 1500 km on the bike? Is this normal? I'm gonna have to spread the secondary clutch to remove all the shredded belt debris and then clean before putting a new belt on.  I'm in Canada so if anyone knows of where to get a better quality belt for this machine and whether or not I just need to spread the secondary to put on a new belt, it would be appreciated.

When a belt comes apart you need to remove both clutches, clean and inspect all aspects of them, shafts and seals behind them as strings/fibers from the belt can get wound around the shafts and damage those seals. If it was slipping for a while first the sheaves will also be damaged and will cause a new belt to fail sooner then normal.

Belts come apart mostly when overheated while under heavy loads. Being just a 500 I suspect it must have been slipping for a while first causing extream heat or something is causing an airflow restriction making it overheat. It is not common to loose a belt so soon...and to get a better quality belt then the OEM is not possible and the price is not reasonable. We have found that Gates makes an acceptable replacement belt for the 800s but not sure if they make one for the 500s. Check with them.

1500 km thats not good. Or have you put the belt under load ? Like lov speed in high range pulling

On my 500s i got 8000km on the original belt untill I reached minimum belt thicknes. The next belt was an ultimax belt got about 10000km of it before it blew up. Dide't pull of the clutches but cleaned out everything i could fins and feel. And blew out all dust with an compressor. Next belt was an moose belt. Got nearly 3000km of it before i heard a strange noise when engine breaking and felet like a list engine breake some thimes. Checker the belt. Lots of cracks in it. Boot good in my mind. 

now i put on an ultimax belt.

The firat ultimax belt "name" was AU 401

The ultimax belt on it right know "name" is au 483 (i think this is the new Verision of the belt)

Here is a cheaper one from China.Says it is made of aramid fibre.

What kind of riding do you do?

The only time the quad is under load is plowing snow last winter and all plowing was done in low 4x4. I've never towed anything or even driven slow in high gear for extended periods of time.  The quad has never been in mud or water other than a few puddles. The kind of riding I do is strictly dirt roads and trails. It was a hot day and I was riding fast on a dirt road when the belt came apart so higher speeds and the outside temps were the only things causing heat.  It shouldn't have failed so soon. Possibility my clutches aren't aligned properly from factory maybe. Not sure if I should just clean it all out and replace the belt myself or put it in the shop to have the clutches checked and a new belt put on.

Hi. I'm new to the forum. I blew the belt on my 500 last weekend too...only 850 kms on it. Usually use low when under load. However, I put 27 " STI Out&Backs on at 350 kms and did notice some slipping as a result. At the time the dealer told me that I wouldn't need to do anything to the clutch. I just read in another post about the reclocking...I need to consider this I think. I'm getting a Gates replacement belt and will update this thread as I learn lol.
