hey everyone I'm new to the forum as well as cfmoto!! I came from a Honda line and wanted something different (and more enjoyable for the wife) that being said I am still in the break in stage (72 miles) ive been trying to not keep a steady engine speed no hard take offs ect ect.... my issue is the engine is noisy. sounds like the piston slapping around no noise while idle but under load makes lots of noise. I do use premium fuel in it to help with fuel knock. can anyone relate or is this just normal with the single piston 500s?? just so we are clear I try to go super easy on it for break in. I just don't want to need s new top end already id be very disappointed. any info would be great! thanks.

I had noise like that, and it turned out that a nut backed off in the transmission (CVT).
Fixed under Warranty, and it didn't strand me up on a hill thankfully.

I have a 2015 that was a demo model with 99 miles on it. I've put 100 miles on it and I think it is noisy as well. It sounds  gritty to me, not smooth like my 1970 trail 90. also when i ride down a slope it makes other noises. I took it to my dealer and had them look at it and they said its fine. I hope if it breaks down its before the warranty is up.

Have you driven a manual shift and been in too high of a gear coming out of a corner, remember that sound? Might be a backshifting problem. Does it rev up easy when you let go of the throttle then right back on it? Is the sound change with the rpm? Rev the engine in park, any noise then?

no noise in park or at constant speed just under load/on throttle. ive have brought it to the dealer they have said there should be no issue. guess either I will hope it is fine or hope that it lets go before my warranty runs out.  any who its in for the 500 mile service. just waiting for it to finish to ride again!!

I feel the same way, mine makes noises when I am going down hill and let off the gas, when I hit the rear brake pedal it sounds like its popping out of gear some times. Dealer says its fine so I will just hope it breaks before warranty is up.

Letting off the gas will engage the engine brake. This will be very noticeable when going down a hill. It will make a bit of noise. I haven't taken the CVTech primary clutch apart yet, but some have a "cog" in them. The pulley will turn a bit before the slack between the cog and pulley are taken up and make a clunk type of noise. Can-Am uses this type and the first time I heard it, I thought something was wrong. Get on a 1000cc ATV and it is a very loud crack or clunk you hear when you get going or let off the gas and then back on it. Not sure if this is it, but worth noting. Rear brake noise might be junk on the rotor or too hard of a pad on there and it might not be bitting in and just slipping

I am having the same issue, sounds like a piston knock, a valve or chain slapping.  Noisy as hell when engine u see load.  Dealer looked at and figured it was the fuel.... nope, not a spark knock.  Almost sounds to be getting worse.

Turned out to be a loose nut in the clutching on mine. no engine slap.
