Noise From Transmission
« on: February 10, 2025, 12:10:22 PM »
Out on my quad today (2023 1000 Overland) and there was a noise coming from the transmission/drivetrain - loud enough that I returned home.
It was like a rattling or grinding noise - never heard it before today.

It only happens when I release the throttle and the engine braking comes on, and also when the engine braking cuts out due to reduced speed and I'm freewheeling.

When i'm pulling away it's fine - loads of power, usual engine sound, no strange noise.
I'm concerned enough that I don't want to ride it to the dealer in case I damage something.

Anyone else heard anything like this?

Better pull the cover and inspect the primary and both retainers. And the idler bearing...now..before something comes apart and costs some real money.

Update on transmission noise -
Took the quad to the dealer and they knew immediately what the problem was.
They had another 1000 Overland in a few days earlier with the exact same problem.
Their mechanic demonstrated what the problem was by grabbing the prop shaft and wobbling it up and down to demonstrate the collapsed bearing going into the rear differential.
The dealer also mentioned the fact that CF Moto partner KTM has pretty much gone bust and this could cause problems with getting the replacement parts (fortunately under warranty).
So now my quad is away to a main dealer where it will probably sit for three months waiting for parts.
To say I'm a little disappointed is a bit of an understatement.
The machine is less than two years old, with only two thousand kilometers on the clock. This coming after a 6 week wait for a brake part when it was only a few months old.
Becoming less and less impressed by the quality of their products.

Hi Dusty dog in Spain,

Frustrating to say the least, especially the wait.

There may be an alternative but you will have to do some deep research/investigation on the splinternet.

The bearing will be a generic item not manufactured by CFMOTO or KTM, all manufacture's, bikes, Quads, cars trucks do not manufacture these parts, they source them and get them supplied to their factories by the millions, pay next to nothing for them then charge me and you an arm and a leg to supply us with a new one.

So "DIG DEEP" ascertain the bespoke bearing type and all of its dimensions, then find a bearing manufacturer, there loads of them in Europe and get your bearing.

Do not be put off by one dealer and a narrow supply chain that they have to follow.

We got apollo 13 back to earth and saved the lives of three brave astronauts, I absolutely sure you can source and provide your bearing for your quad!

Well, just got my quad back from the shop after three months waiting for repair under warranty.
I have no idea what they fixed or replaced - zero paperwork or parts list.
They just sent me a message to say it's fixed and I can collect it anytime.

And the fuel tank was empty - which certainly wasn't the case before it went away for repair.

Can't think why they would drain the fuel for a prop shaft bearing replacement.

They either used it while there or..they collect fuel from all machines that come in to offset their fuel costs....or someone in their shop just plain took it. Either way it's unethical and/or thievery.

Well it is Chinese afterall..

My 2025 CForce 500 says "Made in Thailand" on the frame placard.  That surprised me.

Hey All...Just wanted to chime in on this...I have a 2022 1000 Overland and I could not be happier! 4800 miles on this bad boy and nothing has gone wrong! I am even on the original belt and clutch. However, last weekend our club went for a 2 day excursion to West Yellowstone and just after one full day of spectacular riding and stopping to watch a moose and her calf, we all took off and headed back to the cabin for some chow and socializing. I didn't get maybe a mile into it and when I let off the gas, THE SAME DAM THING HAPPENED...Clunk and grind and WTF is going on? Well...Same as Dusty Dog in Spain...Get on the throttle just enough to put a load on the drivetrain and it ran just fine...Let off the throttle and welcome to clank and grindville. I am actually taking my 2 days off and tearing into it tomorrow. I cant believe I stumbled across this post on my very first google search for a heads up. Any more chapters to your story? I would love to hear...I Love This Machine...ROCK ON CF MOTO!!!
