Coolant leak at water pump
« on: October 04, 2022, 12:05:52 PM »
I have a new 2022 CForce 1000 Overland with 28 miles on it. I took it out for the first real ride last weekend and after getting back home I notice a coolant leak around the water pump where the water pump cover bolts up. It's coming from the rubber nipple that sticks out. Could I fix this by just changing out the WATER PUMP COVER SEAL, part # 0JWA-080004 or could this be a bigger issue?

I would not touch it. Bring it to the dealer's attention only and just make sure all the bolts have the correct torque for now.

I just picked up a used 21 800xc with 100 miles / 16 hrs  in excellent condition.  I just did a full service and found coolant leaking from the seal in the exact same spot as this post. I don’t have a dealer anywhere close and it’s not under warranty.   This machine has only Been ridden a few minutes a time in open fields.  Looking to see if I should replace this seal and the coolant, or just try the coolant with a stop leak, or try and leave it be and see if the seal might get any better ?
Thanks for any advice.

CFM has had lots of problems with mechanical seals as the porcelain sides are low grade and pores. This makes them not seal well with the other half. A replacement may be necessary in time but many wear in and stop...or near stop over time. One thing that does help is the replacement of all coolant with a higher grade such as any name brand 50/50 mix and the addition of a couple of teaspoons up to a 1/4 cup of water pump lubricant. The water pump lube will settle in the defective areas and help seal the two surfaces. I have had to do this on mine at first and it did stop it. Then at about 1500 miles it started leaking again and I increased the water pump lube again and it stopped it again. I expect I will have to replace the seal at some point but for now...it's stopped leaking and all is OK. For you if after changing the coolant and adding the water pump lube it doesn't stop in 20-30 miles, plan on a new seal set.
NEVER USE A STOP LEAK!!!

Thank you.. I’ll try the coolant change 1st. Do you have a recommendation on the brand/ type of water pump lubricant to add ?

Mine leaked at first but slowly stopped and completely quit at 20 hours/200 miles. I have the seal in case it ever stars again. After researching it this is a very common problem and usually corrects itself in about 200 miles. I only had to add a couple of ounces to the overflow so it did not leak much.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum, I have exactly the same problem, I have a zforce 1000 sport R and it only has 56 hours and a lot of coolant is leaking around the entire water pump cover, the amount is unreasonable! Has this happened to anyone else? The agent told me to come and replace a gasket, could it be something more complicated?   I tightened the screws and since then the leak has only increased! Is replacing the gasket complicated? I would be happy to help

Some have had bad gaskets but others...have had warped covers...so have them check the cover for warp-age before just tossing a gasket on it.

First of all, thank you for your comment.
Regarding the years that have a cover of the distorted water pump, can you tell me which years or models? Because the representative of the company says that there was no problem with either the seal or the cover, he denies everything

Also this morning I got up and saw another leak. Are there other people who have had this happen to them and they just replaced a gasket and that helped?

How much NM strength do I need to close the screws?

The service manual should provide the torque values for all the bolts-something every owner should have for their machine. Just guessing but if they are M6s they will be somewhere between 6-9 Nm. As for the years, they very because many get warped by over-torquing the bolts, but common sense tells is to always check for warp-age on any new machine leaks..especially a Chinese manufactured item. This cover is simple to deal with so get a gasket, drain the coolant and pull it, clean all the old material off and set a straight edge across all gasket surfaces. If all is OK then install the gasket as per the manual. If not, replace the cover.

I can confirm changing the antifreeze stopped the leak. Been about 3 months and a dozen or do rides and not a drop leaking.
