20 Hour/200 Mile First Service
« on: July 16, 2023, 01:14:50 PM »
Well... to start out with, I learned a lesson the hard way.  The transmission oil is under pressure and when removing the drain plug, it will blow out.  Yeah...  I was under the unit, so I ended up getting a yard shower with dish soap.  And... I have a mess to clean up in the garage.  I now remember that a YouTube said to unscrew the Fill/Dip Stick first.

Anyway, the whole job took me about 4 hours, from popping off the first Tupperware to the last fill plug.  I did everything......

The valves were in good shape, with 6 on the loose end of spec and two needed adjustment.  (Front cylinder, both exhaust valves.)

I replaced the Transmission, Front and Rear Differentials with Walmart SuperTech Synthetic 75w90 gear oil.

Motor oil is Shell Rotella T4, 15w40 Conventional Oil.

I plan to dump all of this around Thanksgiving, which should be about 1,000 miles on the unit and I will service before winter.

Another lesson I learned....  Unless you like the Cat on your exhaust to be the next Christmas Ornament....  Remember to properly attach one of the spark plug wires.   Yeah.... for a couple of minutes I blew fuel into exhaust and the Cat was a Christmas Bulb.  I quickly realized my mistake, shut her down and attached the wire.

Yeah they do have a vent tube but to get a closed system they put this expandable/accordion-like bulb on it. Might be a good idea to loosen the dipstick after it gets to as hot as it gets just to ensure it never expands all the way and puts any undo pressure on the seals...and that case gasket they have had so many problems with at first...and of course when changing it as you found out.

2023 cforce 1000 EU model.
Mine has 600km 25 hours mostly on road, dealer hesitated to do the valves (no experience with atvs go figure), told me to do them at 2000km. I disagree, i will do them myself like i have done on my past can-ams (single cylinder=easy on those i had).
The cylinder to the back of the machine is easily accessible, the forward one is not. What needs to be removed? Every plastic on the front?
What is the spec for the valve clearances?Dealer wont give me the service manual..he treats it like some sort of state secret... go figure.
Did you replace the gaskets?

I have the 2023 CForce 1000 and the owners manual says to do the first service at 20 hours or 200 miles.

It would not have been good for me to wait until 2000 miles... as the front two exhaust valves were very tight.

I did not replace gaskets.... They seem to be designed to have several service cycles.

I removed the side plastics and the air box and the front cylinder was a little tight with my big hands, but I got the job done with the feeler gauges in short order.

This is probably the easiest machine I have ever worked on in my life.  I am accustomed to motorcycles that can take a full 6-8 hours for a valve adjustment.

Good stuff, if its only the side panels and airbox its a 30 min job.
Thanks

I have a 2023 1000 Overland and my dealer said bring it in for first service after 1000km.

Looking at the user manual it says 320km or 20 hours - I'm now on 330km so I'd better go and have a word with them.
I've printed out pages 123 and 124 of the user manual which detail the service items for first break-in maintenance.
I'll be taking this along to the dealer to get him to do all of these items.

You've got to get rid of the old fluids, dealer doesn't know what hes talking about. The quicker the better, i did mine at 200km 10 hours or so after breaking in the machine. Do not baby it it needs full throttle at the end of the break in period.

Make sure your dealer works with atvs, most dealers here in Greece think atv's are motocycles or cars, when i first got my machine the tires where inflated to 35 psi!!!

They didn't have a clue about what had to be done on the first service. Because of warranty i had to go there and told them to change all the fluids. They ended up reusing the plug washers on the diffs and engine which resulted to leaking.
I ended up redoing all the fluids myself. First service the manual calls for valve adjustment. I did not trust my machine to them, ill do it by myself.

Make sure your dealer knows his stuff.
