Z600 redo
« on: September 21, 2017, 09:37:54 PM »
I have constantly upgraded my Z over the last 3 months since I found this forum and all of the great modifications that some of you have posted on it, most of the changes are listed in my signature but not all of them, in addition to the upgrades I completed a lot of overdue maintenance along the way as well and I hope to be finished with everything soon, I still have a sliding track for the drivers seat I am 6ft. tall and my wife is 5ft, all new backlit rocker switches and some additional decals from Rodin to install. I did install a set of progressive rear springs that I found on eBay and while the ride was much better they were too soft and bottomed out to easy so I plan to call Eibach and see what they have to offer. I cut out the spare tire rack on the back of the cage and chopped off the teardrop side mirrors as well, I think these 2 changes along with the Rodin doors completely changed the look of my Z6.

Looks awesome......I really like the rear cage mod. I too am trying to find the right shock setup. I am currently talking with Bandit shocks and hope to ( with their help) come up with the ideal set up. I will keep you informed.

Thanks, I've been playing catch up with all of you, I always hated that spare tire rack that no one uses, I am surprised the factory didn't do away with it on later models when they introduced the Z8 without it.

I guess I have an odd duck here my 2012 53'' model has the DNM shocks which are factory that I inquired about on an earlier post asking about the rears being so stiff, all 4 of my shocks have piggyback reservoirs with compression and rebound adjustments and from what I understand only the EX model was supposed to have those types of shocks, all of my struts work fine and allow me to go from a very soft to very firm compression setting but even on the softest setting the rear rides hard because the springs are so stiff and rather than replace the entire shock I want to find a spring that is not as stiff, maybe the stiff springs would be OK if I carried gear in the back but I don't, are you looking to replace the entire shock or just the springs, what kind of shocks do you have now?

VMAN,
I have the factory shocks. They work fine for what they were made for, however I carry quite a bit of gear. I am looking toward a set of shocks that can handling the trail riding and the gear I carry for both trail riding and hunting.

My factory shocks have only the 5 level adjustment (twist cam) on the bottom of the shock. I have them set at 2 clicks in the front and 4 clicks in the rear. It seems this works the best for now.

More than likely I will change out the entire shocks. I am talking with a guy at Bandit shocks now, trying to figure out the best set up for my rig.

Those are pretty basic shocks so I understand wanting to change them out, keep me posted on what they come up with.

I took a Z8 out on a demo ride about 3 years ago and liked the additional power and the smoothness of the twin vs the one-lunger but the import taxes down here are nuts, CFM did a great job on the Z6 design and because of that they have hardly changed it, even the Z1000 pictures I have seen look similar, I like my Z6 enough that I decided to redo it instead of buying a new Z and adding doors, windshields etc to it, with the flip up windshield and the rear window that I can roll up it gives me the option to basically ride with the machine wide open and get plenty of air or close it up in a hurry when the rains come and with the new mirrors and the rear cage modification I got rid o the 2 things I didn't like about the Z6 and now I think my Z6 looks about as good as the Z8, I actually like the roof lines better on the Z6 because it is lower than the Z8, for me there just isn't much difference appearance wise to make me move into a new one and while the added power would be nice for my riding it really isn't necessary, I ride alone and set my own pace and at this point in my life I am past wanting, needing, lusting over more power like I did in the past, right now I would choose a set of Elka stage 3 shocks over the added power of the Z8 in a heartbeat. To give you an idea of costs down here I attached a few adds my dealer had online today.

I pulled my differential out a few months ago not a big job, you might get lucky and find a used one cheap. We are caught in a bind with these older machines if they are down with a major problem, you probably need to almost give it away or repair it to sell it and if you get the repair done you might as well keep it especially if you have completed a lot of mods and are happy with it, I have decided that I like mine enough and with the cost of new/used ones down here that if I blow my engine up I will probably ship a new engine down here or send mine up north to get it rebuilt, I have no faith in my dealer down here to do much of anything. Good luck with your decision.
