Will it start?
« on: February 03, 2020, 03:07:54 PM »
I visited the 800 CFM trail that's been sitting neglected in my toy hauler all winter. Damned cold in there. Wanted to see if it'd start like it always has since I brought it home from Sicamous, seeing as it has the original battery and it's closing in on 3 years old and has 4000 miles now.
Just on spec I took my phone and set it on video.

Shoot that started better then mine...and it has a new battery, only 1600 miles on it, started every month, and stays in a shop that doesn't get below 40F....and on a maintainer..

Though it's always started easily, tell the truth I didn't quite expect it to burst to life like that after being neglected. Built onna wednesday I guess. :)

What octane is the gas that you are using?  Does it have ethanol in it or not?  I've got a couple of friends that ride Generals and they claim that 87 Octane with 10% ethanol starts better than higher octane rated gas does.  I personally have no idea because I have been running 91 non-ethanol and 89 w/10% ethanol and have no starting problems.

OK, couldn't help myself as it was time to run mine after a month and a half of sitting. I'm starting to get some slipping of the starter's oneway sprag in cold weather. Starting to wonder if it's also related to the slickness of synthetic oil. It's OK in warmer weather and after it's run a bit so not worried about it just yet. Still..considering where yours spends it's time I think it does start easier. :)

Mine has always started on the first kick.

I even took it up north to winterfest for the poker run and even after having sat in the garage for 2 months, and then overnight in the teens up north, it still started on the first kick. 87 octane 10%. The only real issue was all the frost on the windshield and no defroster! Running with the windshield up was sure enough frigid.

I did notice the oil pressure light flashing on that first start and had to keep RPMs up around 1800 for a few minutes to keep that  light out, but that was it. I'm going to 0w40 when my current stock of oil runs out as a result.

Yeah I think I got ya but only by a whisker.  Funny thing, I started it again today to take it out and size it up for the RZR rear bracket lift I bought, and it was two full lopes till it sprang to life, rather like yours NMK. :)
I buy the 87 octane 'up to 10% methanol' stuff they sell here.

It's all pretty good compared to some piston engines I've owned, never mind! :)

Yeah I have no complaints either. I too have had old carbed engines that if you didn't choke and shoot a little starting fluid into after setting a while you would go through your battery or toast the starter...so I'm happy :)

You characters must be bored  ;D mine starts better than yours ....not very manly  :D

The 800's start the best of all models when cold, I was surprised how poor the 1000's was. 400's & 500's struggle as well in the cold. Typical of the manufacturer to suggest the owners are not running the right oil, I do agree it is important to run correct vis for temp's. Oil is not an excuse for bad cold start mapping.

NMK, yours has I just stepped on a duck sound  :) more low quality parts  :(

Yeah.."bored-stuff"..lol Funny thing about mine is that if I start it every week or two, that sprag doesn't slip..but wait 3+ weeks..and let it be a little cold.. and it always does. Been doing it for a couple of years now so kinda used to it. Someday it will have to get replaced though.

Barfing rain about every day, snow choking most all places to ride around here even if it did look like fun. That's all the thrill I can look forward to for now, starting the sumbitch.  8)

Well I have a new project, building an ABS plastic rectangle bracket for the roof so I can mount a rooftop cargo bag like this one.
Aiming to do a 1000 kilometer giant loop 5-6 day ride this summer. :)
