I made a roller for packing snow on the trails I ride. It can also knock snow off tree branches without damaging them. I used a section of well liner, some square tubing, pipe, and an old hitch carrier to make this. The upright pipes have springs attached that allow them to bend back so as not to break the branches. It still needs to be painted, but that will be done after I know nothing else will have to be changed. By adding the basket, I'm able to carry extra cans of gas, a chainsaw, and extra weight if needed. I tried it out today after having our first snow, pleased with it so far.

So what exactly is the purpose of rolling snow?  We get snow maybe 3 times every Winter in Southern Indiana and it usually doesn't accumulate more than an inch so I'm not familiar with this.

The roller compresses the snow, the same as making a snowball. The air is forced out and the snow will setup (or freeze faster). This was our first snow fall, so I am making a base on which to build up snow on the trail. We want the snow to last, and by compressing it, it won't melt so fast. If I do this after every snow fall, (and we get lots) we extend our snowmobiling and skiing season into late April or early May.  This is the snow fall amounts we can get here in Newfoundland. West side of the island got the most, I live near St. Johns.

Very cool.  I've never ridden a snowmobile, but have heard it's an absolute blast.  That's pretty cool how you can do a little bit to make the season last longer.  Do you watch PowerModz on YouTube?  He's Canadian and loves his sleds.
