Wheels and tires
« on: April 28, 2022, 02:18:23 AM »
Alright, so another question that has probably been answered. Im getting ready to buy rims and tires for my 2017 800ex. I still have the stock wheels and tires. Im looking for 28x10x14s all the around. I%u2019ve been researching for a couple weeks now. Im worried about offsets and such. Im not sure how all that works. I know the rear wheels are deeper than the fronts.

If I buy a set of rims with 4+3 offset for the front and rears. Will everything line up? I have 1 1/2 inch spacers and would like ti keep that stance due to slinging to mud. Any knowledge helps. I%u2019m new to aftermarket tires and wheels and anything helps.

Not sure what%u2019s going on with the

There is a thread here called "Wheel Offset" which would be good reading for you. You can find it and others by searching those words, limiting to "Topic Subjects Only".

A post claims that the factory front wheels are 7" wide with a 4+3 offset.  Factory rears are 8" wide with a 5+2 offset. That seems odd since 5+2 = 7, not 8. From what I read you should be able to pull the wheels off and see the size stamped on them somewhere, maybe a spoke.

My one question would be why you want to replace the stock wheels. My 2021 has very nice aluminum rims and I would just buy new tires and have them mounted.

You can run the 4+3 wheels but you will not want to use the spacers. You can also run 5+2s and still not use the spacers and have near the same stance. Although it's true the stock rears are 8" wide and the fronts are 7" wide, the offsets are nothing like any aftermarket. You can get the info off the back side of the wheel and use any web converter to verify but for example my 2015s are: Rear-14x8" with a +46.5mm offset. That converts to 6.33 inset or the first number. The balance of the 8" width is the second number so my stock rear wheel's offset is 6.33+1.67. The fronts are 14x7 with a +23mm offset. That converts to 4.91 inset or the first number. And again the second number is the balance of the wheel width of 2.09. So the stock front is 4.91+2.09. Yes, this make the front stick out a hair farther from the wheel's mounting surface then the rear. They do that because of the suspension's arc difference between the front and rear...I'm told...so don't worry about that. Do get 14" wheels though because some have had problems with clearance between either the brake calipers or shocks with 12". It will depend on the offset...but best to be safe with the 14s..IMO. Also stick with not more then 10"wide tires for clearance and on 7" wheels. If I ever change-out mine that's what I'll go with...except as mine is a Trail I think I'll stay with 27s.

So because I’m extremely confused now and not very good with numbers lol. I am sorry about that. This is the set up I was going to do. 28x10x14 tires with 4+3 offset tucks wheels. with 1 inch adapters 4/110 converted too 4/137 (so they also fit my can and commander if needed) would this set up work at all? I know the adapters work but I just keep confusing myself I guess. I’m young and still learning I guess.

I just want matching size wheels and tires. I deal with a lot of rocks and also iv been doing a build on this for sometime. Just wheels have always been my down fall.

If you must run the 1" spacer adapters and you want to try and keep close to the same overall width, then might consider a wheel with less outset..like a 5+2. Lets look at the rears to start. Your stock wheels are most likely the same as mine. The 4+3s are going to have 1.33" more outset each then the stock wheels already. Then you add another 1" for the adapter and now you are 2.33"s farther out then it was stock. Times that by 2 and you are now 4.66"s wider.. where you were 3"s wider with just the 1.5" spacers. With the 5+2s you would start out being just .33"s wider, then add the 1" spacers would put you at 1.33"s per side for a total of 2.66"s overall. Just slightly under what you had with the old spacers and still just under the fenders. Too bad these wheels have to be used on two different machines. It would be nice not to have to use adapters. The only thing I don't know is..will the 5" of the 5+2s be a problem on the front. I don't think so...but I'm not 100% sure. Take one of your rears off and put it on the front and turn it to either side. If that 6" inset is ok, then the 5" will for sure.

Oh ok. I think I’m starting to understand now. (Your always very helpful and patient BTW) they do have the 5+2 offset option as well. If you think that would be better. Because I do like the wider stance, but I don’t want to go any wider. I’m probably going to take your word for it and go ahead with this option. I love the tusk brand.

So you saying if the stock rear wheel fit the front without touching. Then this package I’m looking at will work?

I'm saying if the rear wheels and tires put on front do not rub or interfere with anything, then the 5+2 wheels won't either. The 4+3 will also fit, they will just stick out way farther then they do now.

That was extremely helpful!! I totally get it now. I watched a video similar to that but they didn’t explain it very well for me. that one helped a lot. Thanks for all the help. I know what I need to look for now.

The other way they are measured is millimeter offset. This number only gives you the the amount if inset from zero or centered on the width and always from the mounting surface. There are converters on the web that can take that number along with the rim width and convert that millimeter number to the first number of the way we like it in the off-road world...then the second number is always the balance of the wheel width. All wheels that could or may be used on public streets are required to have that data. Here is an example of one of mine. This is what's on the rear wheel...same as yours I suspect. The wheel width and the metric offset:

Then when plugged into a converter you get the first number of the way we like to see it.

Here's one converter that also shows how the + and - mm works:

I got my wheels and tires in. I ran the 1”inch 4/110 to 4/137 adapter with 28x10x14 tires and a 4+3 offset and I don’t see hardly any difference in stance. Maybe just a quarter of an inch further inside. Everything lined up and works great with no rubbing. I do have 2 inch lift kit as well I believe. (Came with the rig)

I’m case this helps someone else.
