Wheel balancing?
« on: June 24, 2019, 11:28:09 AM »
Anybody having their wheels balanced?  I've had a shimmy on the front since I've owned this, and the right front tire has worn considerably.  I've checked toe time and again, and it's getting to the point it's loosening the control arm bolts on the front end.  Could this be a balance problem?

I see you too have the Reapers. In all my years of running them I never had any that had an "out-of-round" problem until these. Mine had one in front and one in back that is so bad that I can not run it above say..30mph until they get good and warmed up. Even them they have some bounce. I though about balancing them but it's a run-out problem....and to compound the issue, when it sits all night I get small flat spots that take for ever to work out. I love the tire's abilities...don't get me wrong...and I have had several 26" Reapers in the past with no issues...but these 27s will be the last set I ever buy just because of that. Now in all fairness I did find that one wheel didn't have it's bead seated well and that caused a low or flat area...but I fixed that so...the rest is IMO defective tire and had I reported it sooner to Discount tire, where I bought them, they would have replaced them.

Wouldn't hurt to take them to a tire store and see what they can do. If you do...let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for the reply.  I considered buying the HF balancer, but how many times will I balance ATV tires?  Not worth it.  I may pop the fronts off and take them to a tire shop and see if they are badly out of balance.  I've pretty much ruined the right front tire compared to the others, although the left front also has irregular wear.  Think I'll look at something a bit more hard-top friendly in the next set of tires.

Found a local tire guy.  He put it on the balancer and it wanted like 7 ounces, which was a lot.  We decided to tear the tires down and clean out the slime and try again.  Took about 3 oz.  Will put them on tonight and give it a run.  $20, not bad for that labor.

HUGE improvement.  Most of the vibration is gone.  I wonder what little I have is now due to how badly the tires are worn.  Anyway, I won't mount a $600-$800 set of tires again without getting them balanced.  Lessen learned.  Tire guy thought it was the Slime causing part of it, too.

Here's what my tires look like.  The right front looked like the left front until our ride last week.  We spent a bit too much time on the hard road.

Man...that's bad! Shoot mine still look new all the way around but I never get the chance to be on pavement. The reviews are pointing me toward Dirt Commanders next time but at the rate mine are wearing it may never happen.

Tell me about it!  Should have done something about it earlier I guess.  I kept thinking it was a toe problem and adjusted the toe several times.  I could never get the steering wheel straight, either.

Re: tires, I'd look for the best all-terrain tire with the lowest weight.  That'll be my next move.  I bought these Reapers for mud mostly, but with how much time I'm on gravel, I'd look for something different.
