Valve Adjustment
« on: August 24, 2020, 10:38:39 AM »
Who has adjusted their valves?  At what mileage?  Where they tight or spot on?  How did you get to them (from what panel)?

I have done valves on all my Honda four strokers (both shim type CRF450's and the old XR series adjustment screws).  This seems pretty simple.  Your thoughts and comments appreciated.

My 800 has 600 miles of very dusty fire roads at variable speeds (although I do enjoy drifting corners).  No sand and only a few water crossings.

Of course I have...several times. And they were never spot-on...that why they got adjusted. The first time was at 300 miles and all were on the outside of the range(loose) except one which was below the inside range(tight). Also found a seized roller on one rocker. Fixed that and reset all valves. Next time was at 700 miles. All were in range but going loose which was good. The next time was 900 miles and all got reset to the minimum as none were going tight. That maximizes lift and quietness. Next time was 1300 miles. They all were as I left them at 900 so no adjustment. At 1700 now..no reason to check them as of yet.

Clean your engine well, blow out around both spark plugs. For the rear, remove the panel in the bed and I remove the RR wheel. Also remove the fan housing so you can get to the retainer to turn the engine. For the front remove both seats and the center rear plastics. Remove both plugs..make sure no trash is down in there that can fall into the cylinders. Remove one or the other valve cover being careful of the seals. Rotate the engine in it's normal direction until you see the intake valves go down then back up. Once up, rotate the engine 1/2 turn. That will be TDC on the compression stroke and all rockers will be well away from any ramps. Set your valves per the manual in the middle of the range. Check them 4 times. Both intakes must be the same and well as both exhausts. Reinstall the valve cover and do the same to the other cylinder starting with rotating the engine watching the intakes. Reassemble when complete.

While in there, spin and inspect all the rollers...you never know. Look for odd flat spots or shiny spots which would indicate it's not rotating.

We have a 2019 Z8 trail with nearly 1400 miles and never had to adjust.  I've had it into the shop three times, at different mileage intervals, with valve adjustment on the list of thing to check and the maintenance personal told me they did nothing because they didn't need it.  I am sceptical because of what I have read on different sites, but I have to go with the service techs on this one.

On the CF500'S AND CF600, my dealer said they "were fine" at 200 new miles and no reason to open anything?
Naturally i told them as long as its in the service request that i asked you check it, and on the paperwork you reply "it didn't need it" then ok,,,,,none of this dealer aside from the owner who's the real pro is worth a hill-of-sh*&t. But I'll play on i guess. They run great I'll say, but would i know of a sound if something is going wrong?

If they get looser they start ticking. But if they get tighter they start holding the valves open. At first it's just slight and it become harder to start..with some loss of power.. but all the time they leak they are eroding and burning the valve seat. Then they leak permanently as no adjustment will fix that...only a valve job will. At least they should be checked after the cam lobes, rockers & valve tops break in...about 500 miles. Then depending on their setting once again around 1100 or so. If stable then it should be good for several thousand. Do know though that valve seats get ground down by any dust trapped between the seal and valve face at closeure causing the lash to deplete. Another good reason to run a well serviced Unifilter...or two :)

It's one of those "every owner should know how to to" things I hate doing but it is very simple once you get to the heads.  A feeler gauge, a few wrenches and good music in the background and its an easy process.  My 1970 Honda CT70 and Z50 are ten minute jobs, the CRF450R is 30 minutes to check, so I am putting a four hour time on this because I have to pull body panels, seats, and it will be my day off so it will be slow and go just chillin in the shop.  And I will be cleaning the CVT out and prepping it for a full snorkel.

Agree, it is kind of a PITA.  Check this out, this is a CFmoto 250 motor on a little chinese buggy I have.  The valve adjusters are on the outside, on the side of the valve cover.  Once you get the motor to TDC on the compression stroke, it takes about a minute to adjust the valves.  Loosen the 8mm bolt, move the adjuster outward until you feel resistance, then back in one graduation mark, and tighten it down.  Done.

I just adjusted my 2020 zforce 800 ex valves at 200miles and again at 1200 miles. I messed up I believe the first time and adjusted the exhaust side to .004 and intake at .006. I think I found the correct specs and set exhaust to .11 and left intake at .006 after the rest adjustment to .11 I have a slight valve chatter at idle and seems to go away with gas peddle. Kindly hoping someone could tell me what they are setting there 2020 Z800s at.
