Tire Weight?
« on: April 14, 2025, 01:33:28 PM »
Was looking at some new Tires and was wondering if 43.4lb per back tire and 39.2 per front tire is too heavy for the 800ex?   I have already reclocked when changed to 29 inch.

Thanks!

Dang..what tire in a 28/29 is that heavy?  I have 27" GBC Grim Reapers, one of the heaviest out there (I thought)..at 27.9lbs ea for the 9" fronts and 32.6lbs ea for the 11" rears on my 800 and it did require reclocking and new primary sliders. I can only guess that yes, it will turn them.. but you will have significant power loss and no amount of reclocking is getting it back. The 800 only had so much to give. The new 800s do have a little more power and maybe it won't be that bad but you sure wouldn't want to put them on a pre-gen2 machine...IMO.

They are Atturo Trail Blade XT sxs,  good looking tire but really heavy.   They made off road tires trucks and then decided in 2022 to start a side by side tire.   Just found them the other day while looking for a more poor boy all purpose tire for some black top use as well.  Everything fit the bill except the weight.

Kentucky passed a new law allowing blacktop riding up starting around July so I am in the hunt for a less aggressive and more comfortable tire than the Bighorn 2.0. The problem I am having is I am poor number one but also I dont want to lose my 29 inch height.  So cheap and 29 inch with some good blacktop resistance all dont go hand in hand so far.  lol.

Just seems like there should be some LT AT tire out there that's lighter. I'm sure they want them to be DOT rated as well.

Check out our new Incursion tires.  Its a killer off-road tire that's also designed to be super smooth and durable on the pavement.

So right now I am running Bighorn 2.0 29's which weigh 24 front/32 back and yes I could tell a difference when I went up from the 26's.  But with the 2 inch lift and 1.5 spacer they do look good and I was fine with it after reclock.  But any who, I was looking at the Tusk Terrabite 29's and they are 32.6 front and 36.8 rear and that is about the lightest in a road worthy tire I have found so far.  Its Crazy they dont make something a bit lighter and highway worthy.  Its making me want to change everything and goto different rims and tires which is difficult for the poor boy but just dont want to lose any more power or cause prob's.  The Terrabites arent a huge jump on the rear but the front jump in weight is quite a bit.  May try them not sure yet.  But if I was to look at a good rim to go with a 28X 10 all around and keep a 14 rim what specs would I look for since I have the 1.5 spacer?  Thanks!

The lift and spacers are causing problems you don't know of yet so if you go with a different wheel/rim, do one with the offset that will allow you to delete the spacers...say something like a 14x8 with a 5+3 offset. Then go with some nice 28s or 29s x 10s. No matter what tire you get, they will be heavier then the stocks and as such will require more power to rotate them. The reclocking and sliders will help get as much back as possible but don't expect it all. That extra weight and lift will effect the clutches & belt, CV joints and steering parts over time but...whatcha-gona-do..can't gain somewhere without taking from somewhere.

After looking at some wheels I may just go with the Terrabites in 29 and just keep my setup the same.  I know I will lose some get up and go but at the same time I like the height and width I got right now.   After looking at some 28's out there, hardly any different in the weight with the Terrabites.  So if going to lose then go big.  lol.  So my doubting tom side kicked in when mentioned problems I yet dont know about.  So which is going to be the culprit, the spacers or the lift kit causing the damage?  i thought most were good with the 1.5 spacers?

Both..but it will take time. The spacers, even being 1.5s, apply additional cantilever forces on the wheel bearing, knuckle bushings and ball joints. Its not a lot more but its there. I have them and have replaced the rear knuckle bushings twice in 3K miles. Starting to get some play in the bearings but I grease them every thousand or so. Got about maybe 500 more I can get out of them. I could take them off but..like you I like the look and the feel. The lift adds more angle to the axle's CV joints making them work harder and under a load in the right condition they have been known to break...the angle...the easier it is to break. Not too bad with just a 2" on an EX though. Can't do it to a trail and expect not to get it.
