Throttle cable froze
« on: February 17, 2019, 07:00:43 PM »
Hello
So I finally had my throttle cable freeze on me. Was about to load up to go for a winter ride and couldn't even push the pedal. I tried heating it up and spraying lube around to help but no go. I finally got it to pull in but it would not spring back so the machine was left wide open revving. Im thinking my best bet is to remove the cable entirely and warm it up in the house and lube it up properly. I guess just spraying the ends was not good enough. My question is I can't figure out how to get the rubber end and tip thing though the firewall by the pedal. Is there a trick to this? And those cable luber device things that people recommend on here worth it over just spraying down into the cable?

THanks!

Yes..the cable lubers are worth it. You will never force the lube completely through the cable without one. It will also push out all the other junk and moisture with it. Its a bit messy but well worth it. I leave mine on, take it loose from the throttle body, drop a rag under the peddle, open the rubber up with something ..and let her graze. Work it and keep going until clean lube comes out.

The cable is close to the tunnel plastics so if you place a hair dryer or heater so it flows in there, it will thaw it...as that's the lowest point of the cable and where water connects. Look low on the firewall on the passenger side wheel well where the lines come out...that hole. Good luck. If you do this in the fall before it gets cold you won't have this issue any more.

Thank you so much for the reply, Ill have to pick up one of those lubers! Yeah it was not a good idea to wash mine either right before it got below freezing! I can't wait to move and get a heated garage lol.

Lol..yeah it helps. A little confession..mine gets to stay in a heated shop, lt's never in any water out here anyway, and I only lube the cable every couple of years just to make it last.

I bought this set about 10 years ago and still use it...same can of lube too. It was only 12 bucks at the time too.

Perfect, just bought it!  How do u access the cable for your break.. do u put the luber on by the foot pedal or somewhere  else? Also speaking of brakes, mine is 2017 trail 800 with the dedicated disc for parking break, do u know where i can buy pads that fit?

The brakes are hydraulic so no need or cable there to worry about. There is a cable on the hand brake but I have never done it cause it looks to be a bitch. It does have several adjusters and an adjuster on the cam that operates it. May want to try all that first.... but if the pads are shot, then the only place to get them is CFM and that means the dealer, CFM Parts Online or Alpha-Sports.com.

Coming from a motocross background, lubing cables was really common practice and I liked a buttery smooth clutch pull  :)

I don't know that a lot of people are doing it on their side by sides and they SHOULD! I used the more traditional luber for years and recently picked up one of these, not kidding, it doesn't leak a drop of fluid and really minimizes the effort needed to force the fluid through... especially with a long cable like the throttle cables on these machines.

I had both throttle and brake cables freeze on me this year from going thru water last summer. I took the rubber boots off the cable ends and put engine antifreeze in the ends and blew it thru with compressed air. Worked absolutely perfectly👌🏻 Came out the other ends and haven’t froze yet. Now too bad I can’t use antifreeze in the battery lol
