I was at a CF Moto dealer today and one sales Guy told me that they don't make a Z1000 . I had to get a brochure and show him... What a tool! You would think if you are a sales guy you should know the product line that the dealership you work for offers.
Anyways I was looking at a Z800 on the lot I'm not sure if it was a 17 or a 18 but the vin # had 18 in it but the build date was May 2017. Can anyone tell me if they know? Cuz once again the sales guy did not know...
It did have a cool electric fan on the right side of the motor (Looking from the rear) with a air duct to blow air on the rear cylinder exhaust. Is this fan on all the Z800?

All have the fan buts it's not electric. Its powered off the crank. As for the year, well there should be a VIN decoder somewhere... but May might be a little early for the next model year.

Has anyone successfully removed that fan yet?  I'm not sure what the point of it is?  Does it cool exhaust pipe or is it meant to cool the head?  I can't imagine that it is effective above 5 smiles per hour.  I'm going to assume that mine stopped working quite a while ago.  I'm sure its packed with mud and crunk.

I have read and was told several things about the blowing of air on both sides. One was that it helped the O2 sensor stay a little cooler as most others place then farther away from the head and have less heat buildup. Another was that they kept air circulating helping to stop the build-up of heat, vapors and exhaust gases. One thing does stand out though, before the fan was installed.. and the CVT exhaust was pointed at the pipe on the other side, CFM did have some issues with fires that some said was because of excess heat and fume build-up...pre 2013 I believe.. In any case I think if I were to consider stopping that air flow, I might be tempted to use a heat wrap on the pipe to cut-down the heat in those areas..just to be safe.

the 10th character designates the year,

G=2016
H=2017
J=2018

(the letter "I" is not used)

OK, Thanks Z8rider!
Now I can tell the dealership that it was a 2017 not a 2018!

The fan would have been an additional cost and responsibility to design, manufacture and supply, so it will be a safe bet that CF Moto doesn't put it on there for no good reason at all. Besides, If I removed everything I don't understand, I'd be looking at a bare frame! :D
