Rattling sound when shifting gears
« on: November 05, 2023, 11:01:08 AM »
Hey everyone, I recently noticed that my z8 will rattle extremely loud when I put it into gear, usually into drive from reverse (I usually back it out of the garage and then put it in drive). It's loud enough that it is startling, like rocks in a tumbler.  I pulled the CVT cover and the belt is intact. Don't see any cracking or fraying. The previous owner had installed Dr Pulley slider weights. They seem to be installed correctly. Not sure what to check next.

Thanks in advance

The sliders look OK but the cam plate slide posts look warn like the sliders are worn out. They being loose can make a lard rattle under certain conditions as it slams back and forth. Doesn't take much to make a lot of noise. Put the plate sliders back on the cam plate and drop it on. Then move it back and forth. If more then a few thousands, consult the manual on checking with gauges. I'd replace them anyway. Dr Pulley makes a set that lasts much longer then the CFMs.

The clutch is also very dirty and needs cleaned up.

By moving it back and forth, do you mean putting the plate with sliders back on the spindle and rotating it to check for movement?

Yeah movement between the plate and the sheave. Go to 4.25 in this video. It's the newer style clutch but it works the same:

Ah that was a huge help. I mistook sliders for the weights.

There is a tiny bit of play.  I'll go ahead and order new sliders.  It isn't clear to me though which ones to get as Dr Pulley's site doesn't mention my model.

This is the only mentioned cfmoto compatible slide https://drpulley.co/product-category/slide-piece/?filter_make=cfmoto

I see what you mean. Looks like the right ones though. Says fits 40 different models.

I have yet to order these slides, but will shortly. I did put the CVT back together after cleaning out all the dirt and dust, and took her for a spin, and everything seems to be in order for the moment. CVT is certainly quieter and no more rattling.

The previous owner put a couple snorkels on, however the one going straight to the CVT has no filter.   Can I get away with a pre-filter on the snorkel inlet or should I consider adding another paper/foam filter inline going to the CVT?

I'm sure this has been asked before on the forums so will search the threads.

They come with either a brillow-pad type filter or nothing. The problem with that is everything is pumped through the CVT system and most of it is abrasive and causes wear and while its doing that it grinds into a fine powder and packs in. The up side of a filter is all that stops however there is a major down side. In normal operation the fins on the primary act as a fan pumping more then 20 times the air through the clutches as the engine will use in an hour. This means any filter you put on it will plug-up 20+ times faster then the engine filter and when that happens, flow drops and heat rises. Anything over 180F is hard on the belt. The greatest cause of belt destruction is excessive heat. Even with no filter there are times when it can get to and over 200 degrees F. A filter is a royal pain in the a$$...I know first hand but it sure is nice to have no more wear on parts and have operations consistent all the time. I keep mine a dry type for easy trail cleaning and have added a Donaldson TopSpin seperator/prefilter. This allows me to ride all week in dusty conditions without cleaning that filter where it was half way through every ride before. I also added a booster fan to help with airflow if needed or if I just need a little ways to get back to camp. For you yes I would do a prefilter bag but even it will plug-up so keep an eye on it. It will keep the big stuff out at least.
