Primary clutch shaft turning with nut
« on: March 16, 2022, 09:38:44 PM »
I was going to re clock the secondary tonight on my zforce 800. When loosening the primary nut to remove it I noticed  the shaft is spinning with it. I did a search but can’t find anything on it. Don’t have a good feeling about this  :-[ any insight would be great
After doing this I researched some more. It appears the C force clutch retaining nut uses left hand thread ( which I assumed they all do after watching a video on c force clutch removal) and our z force's primary retaining nut is right hand thread. I cranked the nut clockwise with my big impact. Did I wreck my wet clutch on 2022 machine with 40 km (25 miles ) on it? Felt sick after doing this since last night.

On all with the wet clutch, both clutch retainers are right handed thread. That means from the 12:00 position it will move to the right to tighten and left to loosen. What stops the outer part of the clutch from rotating on the shaft is the splines on the cam plate...the very last part that's installed before the nut. If you are holding the clutch with a spanner, and turning the retainer nut to the left and the shaft is also turning with it, then it's likely the splines are stripped off because someone did not install it correctly before torquing the retainer. Not likely you damaged the wet clutch but it is likely the cam plate and/or the splines on the shaft are..well damaged. Just to confirm, watch the important parts of these two videos:

Ok, thanks NMK. I wont know for sure until I get it off exactly what I damaged but its going to be fun now trying to hold that shaft while taking off the nut. There was mention of the one way bearing also being toast now on another cf moto group.

One thing at a time. Let's get the clutch off first. You will have to hold the clutch by the inner sheave to hold the shaft so...maybe a strap wrench...maybe by hand with an impact.

If the shaft rotates freely one way but not the other...it's probably still OK.

Had to cut the primary retaining nut off last night. The nut wiped the threads off the shaft. Now to find parts

Bummer. It needs a new shaft and nut. That means the next cover has to come off so..gasket & oil seals as well. Good chance to inspect the oneway and wet clutch because you are about to become face to face with it.

Just putting the cvt case back together. Which way should the one way bearing turn freely? I thought it was counter clockwise. After bolting it together, the shaft turns freely clockwise. The bearing looks fine and I put it back on the way I took it off with the markings ( with arrow) so you can read it, pointing outwards.

Sounds right. Just think of the engine running and turning clockwise...and the belt resting on top of the bearing and the outer race not moving. That would be the same as the bearing spinning counter-clockwise freely but locks going clockwise.
