popping sound
« on: November 18, 2016, 07:39:06 PM »
ok I just noticed a popping sound which I can not figure out where its coming from. now it only happens when I go in reverse and hit the brakes real hard and then ill go forward and just apply the brakes , that's when it makes a LOUD pop which sounds like its in the front end. anybody else heard this pop?

No but given CFMs history with bolts and mounts, check all the diff mounts along with the engine mounts. Also check the front driveline u-joints and its carrier bearing.

I just replaced the carrier bearings about a month or so ago... was thinking maybe the u-joint, but find it funny how it only does it when I hit the brakes hard in reverse..  hit the brakes soft no pop or hit the brakes hard going forward again no pop.

Check and tighten your A-arm bolts!
Can you feel it in the floor when it "pops"? Mine was doing the same thing but only seemed to be downhill. a-arm bolts were loose and making the whole front end sloppy enough to make that noise.

There was also a guy that had a caliper bolt come out...something else to check. ;)

I actually just tightened all the A-arm bolts down the other week because they were sloppy , and this was the first time I drove it since I've done that.. wonder if some how it's connected to that.... I also thought maybe the Break caliber had came loose.. I gave them a quick look over and didn't notice anything.  I tired having my 6 yr old listen and tell me we're the sound was coming from , but we all know how that went..

This sounds like A-arm to me. When you hit the brakes hard in reverse you are essentially putting a lot of forward pressure on the a-arms then when you go forward and hit the brakes you are putting rearward pressure on them. possibly a worn out bushing, could even be a ball joint.  I was the guy with the caliper bolt that backed out, that made the caliper flop down and get jammed in the wheel and broke the bolts and cracked the wheel.

LOL..with most CFM bolts, no such thing..unless it starts stretching or breaks. Besides, on a-arms, it just squeezes the inner sleeve between the posts..and that sleeve is supposed to.. not move. Easy enough to check the bushings...and ball joints.. for play though.

I actually have new bushings ,but I hadn't put them in yet because after I tightened them down the A-arms are nice and tight now. but  I actually did have a A-arm come off shorty after buying it over a year ago while driving down a trail.

Check the mounts where the shock is bolted in on the top and the bottom. Also check the shock absorber itself. I had an upper shock mount popping when I would cut into a hard turn. Also, just a thought, but check the pads and caliper mount on the emergency brake. I had the pads on one side riding too high on the disk and it spurred me to check all the brakes including the e-brake. Found that loose.
