Park went out in transmission
« on: November 09, 2020, 10:12:29 AM »
I have a 2017 Zforce 800 EX and the park went out in my transmission, it indicates but isn't there, all the other gears work normal and I was told by a few mechanics to just use the emergency brake and not waste money on replacing it. I want to make sure that it won't do further harm not have the park as I don't have a problem using Neutral and the E Brake as most machines don't have the park feature anyway. Thanks in advance for any advice that can be given.

Well, the parking paw or lever engages to a gear on the driven shaft that locks it from turning. That Lever is more fragile then most people know. It can easily be cracked , bent, broken or break teeth off as there can be easily be greater stresses on it that it can handle. In that light, it should never be used in transport or on most any sloping hill. Basically the safest use is...never use it or only on level or near level ground. I never use it.

With that said, as far as your question, it would depend on what has happened to it. If it has lost part of it or some teeth, it can move around and might...might get pulled-up into a gear-set under the right conditions.. and if that happens that's the end of that engine case usually. On the other hand if it just cracked the ring like most, it is still around the drum and is just laying away from its mate on the driven shaft. If that's the case it will just ride there from now on and cause no problems. So you see, it a tough question to answer. If it were me I would go in through the drain plug with a small flex magnet to see if I could find any sign of metal parts. If none were found I would assume the ring was cracked and I would go a head and run it as is with the thought in the back of my mind that I might need to...at some time..buy that crate 1000 from CFM to drop into my 800. That's just me :)

Thank you for the detailed information, I understand it a lot more now and when I put into park it does some grinding although when I first "snapped" I had a rough time getting it out of park, I will make sure to drain the fluid and fish around also. Glad I have the service manual to see where all the stuff is at and well I do also like the idea of the 1000 crate motor LOL

Can the parking lock lever cause a clicking noise in the transmission if it is hitting on the gear when the secondary clutch is spinning?

It is possible to adjust it if this is happening?

If I remember right the parking paw just locks the output shaft against the drum so the input and counter shafts can spin freely as they do in neutral. If so, if you hear clicking while not moving, the sound is likely not coming from the parking lever/paw but may be coming from two gears or dogs touching because of a bent shifter fork not parting them enough. A check of the detent and gate alignment is in order. But if you hear this clicking while moving and the position detents on both the engine and shifter gate are aligned, then it may well be from the broken or damaged parking paw. That...can't be adjusted. Only repaired. Below is what the parking lever/paw looks like. It can break on either end and if it cracks and opens-up on the drum side it can under certain conditions make contact with the receiver on the shaft. It may even lock at times if it gets a good bite...but I think it's designed to fall away not into it.

I am hearing clicking while not moving. You can tell it happens only once every revolution.

I took off the secondary drive clutch and turned it clockwise with the nut and a 1/2" drive impact to make sure that it wasn't the dry clutches or the motor making the noise.

Wet clutch is on the primary-side anyway. Have you tried it in both Neutral and Park and if so was there any difference in sound or tone? If not, I assume your parking paw is intact so see if you can rotate to where the noise is and put it in a drive position..H.L or R. from there see if you feel any extra play..like there is a gear tooth missing in one spot. Otherwise your guess is as good as mine and cause for it to be tore-down..IMO.

I have tried both and it is the same.

It shifts, moves, & drives without any problems.

You can just hear a clicking sound it it...
