Noisy stock brake pads
« on: May 28, 2018, 12:42:02 PM »
Hey all, just hit the 100 mile mark on my 2018, 800ex. I'm loving the machine so far and have already put in a unifilter as many suggest on this board. My only gripe would be the SQUEAKY stock brake pads. All 4 wheels squeak like crazy with the brakes applied or not. I've gone as far as to jack the machine up, spin the wheels with and without the pads on to isolate the issue. My question is what pads are everyone else running to get rid of these stupid squeaks?

I went with EBCs all the way around but that didn't stop my squeaking. I found that on all my calipers, either one or both slides were siezed making the auto-adjustment not work and lets only one pad apply pressure to the disk...and as it gets looser it tends to oscillate easier which makes a squeak. I pulled each one off, removed, cleaned and greased each slide...and I gota tell you that's not easy..then when I reinstalled everything I went ahead and use the automotive anti-squeak glue on the pads. Better brakes...and no more squeaking. They slid a steel pin into an aluminum hole with no sleeve or grease so use some anti-sieze grease.

Not saying this is what's wrong with yours but it is a common problem with most all CFM calipers.

That is some good info! Guess I know what I'll be doing my next day off. A little anti-sieze is a small price to pay for quiet brakes. I'll dig into it in a few days and report back if my issue is apparently the common theme.

Some of mine were so bad I had to soak them in PB and use heat on the outside...with some choice words to get them out. Do yourself a favor and get the PB off the rubber seal right away...it dissolves them. Have to get the pin out before you can take the rubber seal out..bad design.

Roger that. Having played with them just yesterday I'm following what you're saying. I'm hoping that since mine is almost brand new, they're not seized in to the point of me making up new combinations of swear words.

While you are there remember to de-glaze the pad surface....and it doesn't hurt to chamfer the leading and trailing edges if not already done.

My brakes squeaked, like to drive me nuts. I bought some of that disk brake quiet stuff, like thick red paint, and tiddled up my brake pad backing plates with it. I haven't heard as much as a single squeak since then.

I ordered some of that crc brake quiet on amazon. Looks like it'll be here Friday so I'll dig into this over the weekend, do all the things mentioned and report back.
