No engine braking
« on: March 03, 2021, 02:00:21 PM »
2019 z Force 800usa, 386 hrs, 4350 miles regularly maintained.
Travelling down hill, decelerating the engine braking intermittently will not engage causing a marbles in a can sound that seems to come from the left rear. Once you slow to crawl things are golden. This has happened four or five times in the last150 miles.
Ideas?
Thanks

Engine braking happens as long as the drive train is connected to the crankshaft. The belt is always engaged and back-shifting on decel so the two components on an 800 with a wet clutch are the wet clutch and the one-way sprag or bearing(not really a bearing). They both are engaged on decell until the RPMs fall below what the clutch shoe springs are rated at and pull in or retract the shoes. That's around 1800-2200 RPM and about 9mph. After that it's all up to the oneway until the speed falls below the crankshaft at idle which is about 2-5mph. "Marbles" sounds are a sign that the one-way is coming apart. It is also similar to the sound some say they hear when the wet clutch breaks a spring. So take your pick. Both will require the same tear-down...if it is either one. You could also have a failing outer shaft bearing that causes an alignment problem for both the clutch and that oneway. All I can sat is to start checking....you will find it.

Thank you for the information on this issue, very helpful.

What I found is the OVERRIDING CLUTCH,MAIN SHAFT, was bad. This is a bearing with a band around the roller bearings. Have to split the case to get at it. Hope this helps others.

Have to take the left cover off..not split the case. Still a PITA though. :)
