NMK, in a previous thread...
« on: July 11, 2019, 01:02:49 PM »
In a thread "New from North Dakota" you stated, in part about the Zforce pre-filter "...The prefilter is what it is..a fine-screen bag over the end of the intake pipe placed in the most dusty, dirty and heated area there is on a ZForce..."  I've search to find if anyone has tried using foam filter material, (like the red outside piece from an old Uni), slipping it inside of the "fine screen bag" that goes over the air intake and using both that foam filter and the fine screen bag at the intake between the seats.  I know this wouldn't be a perfect pre-filter, but wouldn't it be better than just the fine screen bag?  Thanks.

You may be interested in what I did as a temporary fix that has worked well enough that I haven't snorkeled yet. :P  Makes the engine draw air from only the interior of the cab, which I believe was the original engineer's intent.

It's so dusty back there without doing something to force it to bring in air from the front, what ever you put over it will just get packed-up pretty fast and starve the engine. Better to get the intake out of there and then do something if you want.

I wondered about that.  All of the openings around the air intake have got to let a heck of a lot of unnecessary dirt and dust into the intake area.  I like your idea of isolating the intake to allow only one avenue for fresh air.  This modification shouldn't void any warranty, should it?  Thanks

It might. Best check first. Some dealers snorkel it and put another filter on it at the dealerships and not void any warranty but... you doing it?... better check first.

Thank you, I'll check before making any mods.  I do know that my dealership builds and installs their own version of a snorkel system, so obviously, they do allow some kinds of modification.  I'm also wondering how much air the intake grid allows air to flow past the intake filter to get into the engine area.  This additional air would help cool the engine and other moving parts.  With a full skid plate under all of that any inlets for air may be beneficial.  Am I overthinking all of the pros and cons about plugging these holes?

When I was in the thinking-stage of all my modifications on the intake I did take temperature readings just on the engine side of the intake tube both before and after the first mod where I did seal-up the forward grill. I forget exactly what the rearing were but there was little or no difference between before and after sealing the grill. I do remember it was hotter then hell and couldn't understand why anyone would allow an engine to get it's running air from an area like this. That along with all the crap and dust the tires through up into that area. All I knew was it had to come out of there no matter what. I also did not snorkel the CVT discharge as it was intended to help with air movement back in there. But others have and so far...no problems from it.

Have any of you guys stopped to think why you are messing about with things like this when all you have to do
is fit a partical separator from S & B filters for $400 and its job done.

All a snorkel is going to do is suck the shit in from a different place.   :-\ :-\ :-\

When we started all this stuff many years ago there wasn't one that could easily be adapted to the ZForce. Now that S&B has one for the YXZ that can be, it may make better sense to do just that but still, not everyone has an extra $400 laying around. Still..you need to port that intake out from where it is. And no, its not a waste of time to snorkel it. It gets less "shit" and way less engine heat to boot.

NMK - I just spoke with my dealer (CFMOTO Dealer) and he told me that some people were enclosing the air intake compartment area due to the excess heat generated from the engine.  We talked about it eliminating, not only the heat, but also excess dirt and dust and he said to go for it and that building an enclosure would not present a warranty issue.  So, thanks for the guidance and here we go.
