Lately I have had a strange ticking sound at times that sounded like it was coming from the inside but would quit off idle and would change if I just tapped the gas. Today I started it to turn it around in prep for the clutch work and it went crazy so I took the time while it was cold to give it a closer look. As I grabbed the exhaust and wiggled it it would stop..so..its pipe-related. Found that the shield over the front pipe was touching the springs. Gave it a little bend and that's all it took. Quiet again!

Yeah because it sounded so much like a tappet or chain problem...I think because these are Chinese I (for one) tend to think the worst first.

And as it works out that shield is mounted to the frame so with engine being mounted on rubber, the movement would touch it....actually spank it against the spring with every cylinder firing.

So, if you hear weird stuff, take a real close look. It may be something as easy and stupid as this.

When I put in my two brothers exhaust I had the same issue. Like you, a simple bend of the heat shield fixed her right up. Just have to be careful you don't do it too much or it'll rub on the head cover
