Loss of speed
« on: April 23, 2021, 06:57:59 AM »
Hey guy's I just got my machine (2017 z-force 800) back from the dealer after having a complete "platinum service" done along with new belt and other suspension related repairs. My question is my top speed sucks. I use to get 67mph no problem, now I'm lucky to get 52mph and I get a warning light that comes on. Red light next to my "Park" indicator. Manual says EFI fault? Any one else have an issue like this? Is this normal with a new belt?

New belt has nothing to do with it.

Bring it back and have them fix it.

I agree...take it back. Just the Mil/EFI light coming on says something is wrong.

67mph?  Damn.  I haven't gotten close to that.  Maybe upper 50's and the high RPMs always make me nervous.

Yeah I'm not sure I want to run a Chinese engine at or anywhere near the RPM limiter for any length of time...

I've had mine to 64mph (Z8) but that was only for a short spirt to see how she pulled.

I rarely hit 40mph where I ride.

Same here. FS road speed limits are 35 as I recall. I too rarely ever go over 40-45. It's an off-road vehicle afterall...:)

I only do it on he paved road by my house once and a great while. Mostly under 40mph here too. Just wanted to see if it still would do it. I haven't checked rpm yet. Should hit 7,000 I think.

Just an FYI: Anytime you get a machine back from the dealer after having work performed and you notice a change for the worse or an error message appears (error code, idiot light, etc.) Notify the dealer and tell them you are bringing it back. That way, they can't say it was something YOU did. The longer you have it in your possession with it running sub-par, without the dealer (or whomever worked on it) the less of a leg you stand on.

This is definitly something the dealer caused by either doing something wrong, or by not doing something they should have. And they need to fix it on their own dime. If it was a part that should have been replaced, you may have to pay for the part. But the labor is on them.

And, I think THEY should come and pick it up and return it. But, that is just my wallet talking.

To get to the trails near my house, I do have to run on the paved roads for a couple of miles. And since my machine is new, I do have to vary the throttle levels, which I do. But, just for fun, I did increase the throttle to almost full and the speedometer did register over 65 mph. And, I was on the flat and level.

Notice, I did mention that the speedo REGISTERED 65 mph? My GPS tracker read closer to 60 mph. And on the just graded, mag chloride sprayed dirt roads I run on as well, to get to some distant parts of the Wolford Rec Area, I have also registered over 60 mph. (GPS tracker showed closer to 55-58+)

And, no, I do not run 4wd, I switch it off and only use it when needed. I did climb some pretty steep, rock strewn hills in 2wd that I was damn amazed my z800 trail got up with no problem. Only a couple of scrapes as I have learned to keep on the high side. (I do have an UHMW skid package on order)

That guy hasn't logged-in sense May of 2022. I would look at it being either an injector or O2 sensor problem. If it effects how it runs I would look at injectors first as well as the engine speed sensor..AKA crank position sensor as they get junk tossed-up on the tip. Just pull it and have a look...easy enough to do. If all is well then test the fuel pressure...and check the tank's vent check valve...they stick shut sometimes.

Much depends on why it now tops out much slower than it did before the mystery 'service'. Does it top out now because it hits the rev limiter or because it just runs out of poop to go any faster? The former suggests they may have put in the wrong belt or they assembled the CVT improperly. For the latter, see if its got a brake dragging or some other added resistance. Anyway that shop screwed it up.
