Looking for advice- Coolant drips
« on: December 08, 2024, 03:46:19 PM »
On my 2023 800 Trail, it has been unfortunately sitting on garage for past 3 months while I recover from some serious injuries, not related to the 800 Trail.

Just today, my son noticed there was some "green stuff" leaking from the side by side. I took a look and it's a bit more than just a couple drips. I am unable to get underneath for a closer look. It has been rather cold here lately getting down to lower 20's and into the teens.  I have had similar but not quite as much coolant drips under previous motorcycles in similar conditions and they had come from the weep hole under water pump. As spring approached and weather would warm up, no more dripping and no issue as a result.

But I just wanted to seek advice and see if others think this might be an issue and should I get it checked out? I'm still under warranty as I bought it earlier this year. Just to add, it's not a huge puddle but more than just drips and very noticable.

If it is from the weep, its very common on these because of the low grade porcelain used in the mechanical seal. If it's not too bad many..like myself have found that adding some water pump lubricant helps smooth-over those porous areas and makes then seal better. Doesn't take much ...about 1/2 cup added straight into the radiator and run a while so it can get all through the surfaces. If that doesn't stop it it may have to be replaced. In about 15% of the cases they have to be replaced...but that means in 85% of the cases the water pump lube fixes it..at least until it can't. I also found loose hose clamps so check those too.

This is what I used but there are many others out there:

I struck out at O'Reilly's and AutoZone but I found Zerex brand stuff at Napa for a reasonable price. And that's the brand of coolant I've been using for years with my motorcycles. I did find a lot of off brand choices on Amazon but also found Valvoline kind there too. But, it's $18 for 14.5 oz. I think I will give the Zerex a try...

Thank you.

Good luck. Remember the size of the system is small so only use what it needs for 3.1 qts..plus a hair for good measure :) ...and no air gap on the radiator. May have to pull a little out first but a turkey baster works fine.
