lean running
« on: May 02, 2016, 09:26:50 AM »
I'm slowly working through the niggles on my z8 ;) next topic - lean running, mine runs lean on the low end with some flat spots and I'm thinking weather the EJK Fuel Injection Controller will help over come this problem, I understand this lean running affects other user's z8's as well.
Does anyone one know what the exhaust gas reading's should be on the z8

Sorry, I don't know on the exhaust gas readings but if there is a problem with the controller, it will be covered under warranty. It may also be a bad o2 sensor. I would get it corrected first before looking at aftermarket equipment.

ah ok, I assumed from other peoples posts that it was sort of normal for some to run lean, I believe mine has run out of warranty as mine's over a year old plus i'm the second owner.
Mine doesn't show any faults logged in the system, my nearest dealer is 100 miles away although not far but it will still be a pain to get it there

May be several things...even things like a bad injector, weak fuel pump or plugged fuel intake screen...water in the tank, bad tank breather check valve..plugged fuel filter...things like that. I really think it would be worth checking a few of these things out first.

Ok, i'm going to change the fuel filter in the next few days and have a look at the fuel pump screen, is there a way of testing fuel pressure and what should it be

It's all in the manual...and it's free here.

These machines are set lean from the factory. around 14.4 AFR. Its "normal" so to speak. You can thank the EPA/CARB for that.

Just an update to those who maybe suffering from low speed flat spots or lean running, after reading an article about a tuning chip for the z8 I discovered that a cooler air intake can help the engine run richer/better.
As the intake is just above the exhaust manifold next to the hot air vent the engine is breathing hot air most of the time, which may cause her to run lean.
It maybe worth looking at fitting snorkel or redirecting the air pipe to pick up cooler air somewhere else.

Been out for a few hours and thought I would check the air temp she's breathing, at least 51 deg C on a cool day.
Project cold air intake on the cards now ;)

Yikes! that's 123.8F!  No wonder mine likes the cool outside air so much  better. Hate to think what it was out on the desert on a hot day :(

And that was after I switched off, I reckon it was more when she was running, that must be reducing performance (hot air being less dense) I also wonder if it's contributing to some z8 running hot (lean running = hotter running temp)
Try putting your hand over the vent when running you'll be surprised how hot the air is coming out.

Not mine...it's been seal off and it now gets it's air through yet another filter w/prefilter outside.

Looks great, I'm not sure if I will do the same, I want to remove the moulded plastic tube and have the inlet further away from where you have it (not that yours is a bad idea ;))

I feel it's still important to have a vent there to allow the hot air to escape.

Oh my hot air still escapes..just not into the cab...lol Neither does the noise and fumes.
