Kill switch…. EFI light ?
« on: October 02, 2023, 08:15:04 AM »
Is it possible that a faulty kill switch can cause the engine to die and light up the EFI light ?

Was on a long ride on the weekend - 190 km - all good to destination - stopped for an hour or so - started the machine to leave and the engine died - tried to restart - dies.
Turned the key a few times, nothing, as if the kill switch or the brake not pressed

Did this a few times by flipping the kill switch off/on and finally got it to run.

The engine died and restarted twice while riding in the first 10 min and then ran perfectly the rest of the trip home - even stopped and shut off  2-3 times.

Any ideas

Yes..it's possible. And you wouldn't be the first to have a kill switch fail. Same for the key switch...it would do the same.

Ok, I’ll pull it and check.

What would be the drawback to deleting the kill switch entirely ?

I've thought that myself. Its a safety-fire prevention measure so on a roll-over there is a second way to kill power to the ignition and fuel systems if the key can't be accessed for some reason. Do you need it? Well...only when you do...:)

Test the switches but know they aren't the only thing that can cause what's happening.

The next most common things on the 2018-20s...and a few 21s is the main fuse holder internal crimp connections failing and a chassis ground getting loose..mostly at or near the bolt on the CVT cover where all grounds meet the battery ground.

I had a near panic encounter setting up for a left turn from a road with 50mph traffic - I bumped the kill switch reaching for the turn signal switch. Since these machines do not coast it slowed down VERY rapidly, fortunately I was not being tailgated. The passenger side tires were on the yellow line when machine came to a stop, did not make it completely into the left turn lane.

I always thought it would be awkward to reach across the dash for a rocker turn signal switch..forgot about the kill switch being right there. Might be worth moving it to the far left or even better..finding an arm switch that can be clamped to the steering column. Maybe even something like this could be rigged-up:

It would be nice to have a typical turn signal lever but I'm done with wiring. I thought about moving the kill switch but I would have to drop the heater to access the switches. I dropped the heater to install the turn signal / hazard switches, almost gave up attempting to get the heater re-mounted, was a huge hassle getting the bolt holes to line up. The heater was installed by the dealer I bought machine from before it was delivered.
