Jerking
« on: February 29, 2016, 11:42:01 AM »
Hi all, I'm new to the z8 world and want to know if there's anything that can be done to eliminate the jerk when pulling away from stationary ? (I understand it's a common problem)

I have noticed the engine seems to cut out when accelerating away from a stand still, only for a split second, it feel's like she's too lean at tick over.

She also seems to tick over slower than I would like, is there any way of raising the tick over speed ?

Any help will be gratefully received  :)

Welcome. So..what does "Tick Over" mean?  I'm not familiar with that term. Most I know of do not have any jerking or hesitation at take off but there can be some issues that can cause it. There are some reported poor electrical connections near the battery that causes low power to..everything including the ECU and that causes behavioral problems as one might suspect. Water in the tank is another as well as a stick tank vent check valve.

Sorry idle speed

Ok..just out of curiosity, what does your tachometer say it's idling at? Idle can be adjusted but it involves both the throttle body butterfly set and the throttle position sensor set and that takes some equipment to get it right. Its usually done at the factory and if it's off later it because of an outside problem such as voltage or fuel pressure...or a sticking injector.

Ok thanks, I will have a look, once it's past idle speed she runs great, but the jerking is a pain as I use mine on the road as well, running in slow traffic can be a little embarrassing ;) I understood from a fellow user here in the UK that it is normal, I'm not so sure and would like to get it sorted

some of that initial jerk from stand still is the hesitation then engagement of the wet clutch then the primary engaging.

Update- mine almost feels like a double jerk, I think the first one maybe the transmission and the second seems to be the engine cutting out.

One thing I have noticed is that the engine only cut's out under load, it doesn't seem do it when in park.

I have checked the idle rpm the rev counter is telling me 1450-1500rpm (but it still seems slow to me)

I'm going to check the fuel vent and make sure the tank doesn't have any water or dirt inside next.

Back in the day of manual choke (for cold start) I would say it's like when you push the choke in before the engine is warm enough.

My wife made a comment the other day when we went for a ride, she thought it felt as if the engine was going to stall every time we stopped at junctions etc.

Well, that's just not right. If it's still under warrantee take it in. Its probably a bad sensor somewhere. Every once in a while when I put mine in reverse and touch the gas it dies like I killed the switch. It always starts right back up and doesn't do it again for a long time. My warranty is now over so I'm on my own.

Yeah mine is too plus I'm the second owner (not sure if that would make any difference)  she's on 1520 miles now, 220m in two weeks ;)

I've been thinking it maybe something like throttle position sensor or something related to it.

The scan tool is a dealer only as far as I know. Someone made mention of a fuse holder in another post causing problems with running an dieing on them.

Thanks guy's, they do have a basic on board diagnostic system which involves a light in the dash blinking at a certain rate which indicates what's wrong (details in the service manual) if I've done it right it's not showing any fault's.
I will have another look later.

The problem with the fuse holder is that it's made of ordinary steel, even if you close the clips so it would grip the fuse better it opens up again when you fit the fuse.

No, I can drive around it by stepping harder on the gas when pulling away but I'm not 100% satisfied with that, she doesn't do it when she's cold it's only when she up to temp that it happens.

I'm going to try the clutch next, change it to the b2 setting and see how that goes.

Can you have someone video it when it's doing it so we can see it?
