Funny thing... I've got 45 yrs working on boats and yachts, mainly in the size category that they pretty much remain in the water.
In my business with engine intake its about keeping water out.
Turbo's and blowers on diesel engines consume a very large amount of air.
I've seen some decent U.S. built boats with the most idiotic air intakes/plenums that you think were actually designed to direct everything from seawater, rainwater and boat washing right into the engine compartment.
So such things are not surprising to me when purchasing a machine such as these from a relatively newcomer, and from China 8)

Ok, I ran the new intake mod for the first time at one of the big off-road spots here near Albuquerque NM.  Rio Puerco.  After 4 hours running, absolutely no heat out of the vent in between the seats, and the filter was almost dust free.  I think it’s a keeper.  But it’s a dog in the sand, the CVT doesn’t seem to downshift at all and it just bogs about 30mph down the wash.  New topic coming.....

Yeah..they are like the family station-wagon set on B1 from the factory. That's The west mesa was my proving ground to. Go C1 or B2..no more...and 24 gram Dr Pulley sliders. You will feel pretty good about it again.

Well I tried to create a boxed insert using ABS to close off the intake from bad air and dust but it I just didn't like my finished product.  So I got some thick heat resistant shielding and doubled it up and created this insert.  Like it much better just not sure if I need to drill some holes on the front of the intake.

Thanks, I tried it out today and done a thermal test.  I let the machine run about 20+ minutes and there was a significant difference in heat.  See attached pictures.

That shoes how much heat cones from the exhaust pipe and head being right there. Just think about your engine having to suck-in and use heated air line that...let alone all that dust and dirt.

I'm still puzzled why a company like CFM whose goal it is to be prominent in this particular market would keep this seriously flawed design in production.

I've wondered the same thing. They know well of the problem and still..nothing has changed sense the start in 2014. One of the things that drew me to them was that they said..they fix any real problems every three months and implement the changes directly on the production line instead of waiting until a new model year. They must not consider this a real problem is all I can figure.

Yes, and I would assume they have somebody in Minnesota monitoring this here forum, no?
Again... The idea to pull air from the cab is a great idea, but then to leave it open to unwanted heat and dust is simply crazy.
My guess is that they do not see it as a liability to "them", so no big deal. (?)
The funny thing is, all they need to do is mold up a plastic pizza box, pop it in there and it's a done deal!  ;D

glenlivet this is a terrific mod!

I used a sheet of embossed aluminum heat exhaust shield & aluminum tape to make your box.
I also added a filter to the intake cover.  I originally used a Harley Davidson mushroom filter but it was too thick;
It was restricting the air flow to the motor.  I ended up using a filter for an AC window unit.
