Helix shoe sliders
« on: February 24, 2017, 06:33:44 AM »
I had to replace my helix shoe sliders a month or so ago.  My machine had a little over 1k miles on it at that point and I found it kind of amazing that they were REALLY worn at that point.  I also didnt like the "grippyness" of them as they are supposed to be a sliding surface.  I have ordered some Delrin (Polyoxymethylene) which is a super stable plastic that is slippery like ice.  I think im going to make some helix sliders out of it and see if I can improve on the clutch performance.  I will keep you guys up to date as the project progresses.  But i wanted to get everyone elses experience with the helix sliders (there are 3 of them in your clutch and I will post a picture below) and how yours look after how ever many miles you have.  This mod should make the up shift and back shift much smoother and more fluid which i have found to be an issue on these machines.
I can imagine a world completely at peace.  A world where there are no weapons, no war, and no violence at all.  And I can imagine us taking over that world because they would never expect it.

I'll try a set, I'm to lazy to build new
If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

This is the #1 reason I did so much to filter the incoming air...that and what was happening to the primary sliders. And I was also looking for input on a back-shifting problem I was having which is when there is a load on the sliders such as under power on a hill climb, they don't want to slide back unless either the slope is reduced or a flick the throttle and take the pressure off the slides. Its better on the A2 because of the spring preload but that's actually way to much for any other riding...at least my riding...so I needed a mod to make those slide easier....and it looks like its Chuddly to the rescue! :)

Just a side note, when I have mine apart I polish both sides and apply some weapons-grade graphite and that works very well...for a little while, then it wears off so a material change to Delrin is going to help. Wish the ramps were steel though.

Mine were shot pretty quick too. I thought about making some Delrin ones too, but they are an odd shape and just didn't want to go there. If you can pull off a good set of these, I think you won't have problems again.

Did you notice if the spring rubs on the centre boss like mine does

Mine rubbed/touched too. I flipped the spring and colored the old rub area with a marker...and it didn't hit anymore last time I had it apart.

Mine never rubbed.  That would be a spring issue.

Quick update on this project.  I have a brand new helix shoe on its way and the Delrin should show up at my house today.  I am going to make a cast mold of the original shoe and then try to melt/cast the Delrin into the mold I made of the original. It may be a week or 2 before I get some real movement on this because I'm helping at a race event this weekend and that will consume a lot of my free time.

No but I can tell you if I ever find one..I'll buy it! Under load the friction level is too high on these and hurts back-shift...and some up-shift. On another note, sense I now filter the incoming air, my sliders have all but stopped wearing. Now if they would just SLIDE...lol

No extra air for me yet but If ever it slows down enough to heat up on a week's ride I'll think about it. For now I am using a good sized double-cone pleated micro cotton dry type filter that can be popped-off, washed with water, tapped or blown with air and slapped back on. I was oiling it..but it collected everything and I was worried it wouldn't last long enough. Dry it gets all the stuff that causes the most wear so..that's OK.
