Fuel Capacity 2023 Zforce 800 Trail Gen 2
« on: August 29, 2023, 05:11:09 PM »
Little bit confused about the specs on the fuel capacity of the 2023 Zforce 800 Trail Gen 2.  Spec sheet at Cfmotoi USA says 6.5 gal along with about every online source I have looked at; now my owners manual say 9.77 gal; I recently completed a 91 mile ride and my gas gauge indicates about 1/2 tank (3 bars).  Either the gas gauge or the online spec sheets are wrong.  Has anyone had the opprotuntity to fill the tank from almost empty.  I would hate to try a trip that is over 120 miles without spare fuel if I only have 6.5 gal.

I know this-don't trust a CFM gas gauge. Sometimes it will read 1/2 rank then in a few miles it's flashing...other times it's something else. Better sometimes to know your average MPG and the total "usable fuel", then use the trip meter. For example my old Gen-1 specs say its a 7.1 gallon tank but I have loaded it and drained all I could get out of it for the yard equipment, took it to the station for filling and to the neck it holds 7.4 gallons. That .4 is probably getting close to sucking air so I consider 7 as usable. I average 22mpg so when the trip gets on the high side of 135 I better be getting close to base...even though I should be safe to around 150..ish. Oddly..8 out of 10 times about 130 is when it starts flashing..and that's about a gallon left.

I don't trust the fuel gauge one my 2022 Zforce 800 either. I carried a gas can to find out how far it will go until empty. The bars on the gauge started flashing at 95 miles. At 120 miles the whole gauge started flashing, engine stopped at 125 miles. I'm currently at 110 miles on this tank, fuel gauge shows 2 bars. I will keep the gas can in machine until I get a good average.

I only have 500 miles on 1 TRICK Pony, hopefully mpg is increasing a little more as engine wears in. No dirt near me, 100% pavement miles, easy on throttle.

I carry the 2.5 gallon can I have for lawn tractor fuel. I would always carry extra fuel when trail riding.

I can carry up to two extra 4-gallon flat packs but lately we never go for more then about 50 miles..mostly less, so I never take any with me anymore. Thinking about taking all the mounts and extra locks off. But if I was ever going far enough to be of any concern I would take one with me for sure. If not for me..for anyone else in need.

I realized I didn't answer the question in the original post about actual fuel capacity. If no one else with a gen 2 replies, prolly the easiest way to find out actual fuel capacity is same way as I did - drive it until it quits, use spare gas to get back to fuel station, then fill up. I came up with same result as NMK for my gen 1, figuring 7 gallons is useable.

The CFMoto Service Manual for the Trail 800 Gen2 says the tank is 37L or 9.7gal (US). The indicator turns yellow at 11.5L or 3gal (US).  I haven't run mine down to get the yellow indicator yet, but starting with a full tank I ran it down to 1 bar on the display (and ran for some time with 1 bar) before refueling.  I put a little over 5gal in which didn't fill the tank all the way but did light up all the bars on the dash display.  Based on this I think the 9.7gal tank size is most likely correct.

I did notice that with the very first full tank on my brand new 800 I got about 40 miles until it showed it was down by 1 bar.  On the second or third tank I paid closer attention and seemed to get about 95 miles on the first bar. Both of these observations were with the 800 sitting on level ground.

Finally bit the bullet and siphoned the tank down as far as I could, low fuel light came on.  Added 9+ gallons so it appears that the manual is right and the spec sheets from Cfmoto USA is wrong.  At least I will not have to worry about carrying extra fuel on day trips, longest ride so far was a little over 90 miles.
