Front U-Joints and Carrier Bearings
« on: September 04, 2021, 03:45:24 PM »
What is everyone using for replacement front driveshaft u-joints and carrier bearings?  Is there a better replacement than the stockers?  Mine have all failed at 2500km and want something greaseable for the u-joints if possible.  Can I run this unit in 2 wheel without the front shaft?  Bolt up flanges on both ends so I assume I’d be good as long as I don’t hit the 4x4 button.

Thanks.

Yes, you can run it with the drive line out...just remember you don't have 4wd BEFORE that hill climb or mud hole...lol. I have not had to replace anything on mine yet but it won't be long...its getting looser every year. I plan on taking the complete unit and carrier to my local drive line shop and see if they can custom-make me...a real one. Mine's been floppy and sloppy sense new.

Thanks for the quick reply NMK.  I can literally move the drive shaft a big 1/4” so my time is now.  Pulling it out right now and I will update some part numbers if I can find anything aftermarket that works.

Did you ever find out anything about these parts?  I'm about to do the same job on my Z1000, I ordered 4 OEM u joints and 2 OEM bearings for the carrier and have them in my possession, but I'd rather have quality joints that are greaseable.  Thought I'd found some All Balls greaseable u joints that would fit, but after looking at my driveshaft again I'd never get a grease gun to fit in between the yokes with a center mounted grease fitting..  Now I'm looking at u joints with the grease fitting on the end of a cap, but haven't found the right size and type yet.  22x50mm external snap ring.

How do you tell if there are issues?  Just grab the drive line and see if it moves back/forth?

Nope..at least not on mine- the splines-to-yokes there on mine are so floppy-loose you would think there was a problem. You have to look for movement in the shaft itself and end play and side play in the U-joints themselves. Of course in my head I think because of how loose the splines are, in time, they will wear enough to start stripping.
