Flat Tire & Why CF Motos are so awesome.
« on: May 11, 2016, 05:57:15 PM »
Today, I took a good Friend on a ride; he drove one of our machines, I in the other.
We took off, rode a while, and he told me that the rear end was squirrely in the corners. I had told him before we left that if he's in a corner, and there's loose pebbles etc, it'll slide real easy, so that's what I thought was going on. My friend, (who will be joining this forum shortly) is the MASTER of understatement.

We stopped, 35 miles into our ride, looked for some Morels for a little bit, when I noticed his right rear tire was flat. Real flat, not low, but gone.
So; we rode out of the woods to a county maintained road, (we can ride on them here legally) and we switched vehicles, so I could ride it the rest of the way home. I asked him if the ride changed, since we stopped to look for morels, and he said, "nope, same as before".

So; I drive the machine the rest of the way, probably another 15 miles, on the flat.
"Squirrely"?
No, Sir. Dangerous.
You make a left turn & this thing will HAPPILY throw itself off the road to the right, no problem. I have no idea how this fella, who never rode a SXS before, was able to pretty well fly through the woods on it, for 35 miles....and he loved it. Wants one. Is going to buy one. Maybe today. He wanted all the links, so I sent them to him, including this forum.

Now, the rest of the story.
I call the dealer, because the tire's wrecked, I need a new one.
"$315.00 plus shipping, here in ten days, maybe more".
WHAT?
So, next he tells me he'll sell me Sedona Mud Rebels for it for $121 apiece, & I end up buying (2) sets of them on Amazon for $290.00 for a set of (4) tires, delivered. Now, I know these won't be top of the line tires, but I'm hoping they're not junk, they got pretty good reviews, anybody have bad experiences with them? They're radials, 6 ply, and that's good....

So, in the end, my friend, he rides my 800 EX for about 35 miles on a flat tire, and like a dummy, I didn't check it, just thought he was sliding around corners, is all. I think he was more like trying to save his own life.... :)

Tire store in town is going to put a tube in the malcontent tire so we can use it between now & the time the Sedona's get here.

Coming probably next week:
"For Sale, 8 ATV/UTV Tires, 4 are 26x9x14, 4 are 26x11x14, one has a tube in it, 500 miles on them, $400 OBO"

Now, somebody tell me; how much of a testimonial is it that a Guy goes & rides 35 miles on a flat, then goes to the dealer to buy one of these machines for himself? Huh?  ;)

I can't believe the wheel is still usable after 35 miles of running flat...wow. Sedona makes a good and trusted tire. Way better then what these came with. You will be more then pleased.

Yep, NMK, the wheel looks fine, no problem, the tire was chopped up some on the outside of the tread, I pushed on it & pulled on it once I was home & had it in the air, it was letting air come through the sidewall. It actually ran over 50 miles while flat, too. I think that the combination of there being only one rider with the idea that it'd take you for a hell of a ride if you're turning left made it to where not much pressure ever got on the tire itself, some, but not all that much. BTW; I was driving it at just over 40 MPH on the straight stretches on pavement....went straight, just NO TURNING....

Thanks for the info on the Sedonas; I wan;t real sure about them, but I didn't want to pay $1200 for a single set of tires, either...

Update on the rear wheel that was driven on for 50 some miles on a flat...we put a tube in the tire & it's fine, no damage at all to the wheel.

So....the point is, you can drive a CF Moto ZForce 800 EX on a flat, on the rear, on the opposite side of the driver, for (50) miles at least without wrecking the wheel. The tire itself is still good enough to stick a tube in & use it some more. (Sounds of clapping).

Does anyone put in green "Slime" or other brand of stop leak? I use it on my zero turn lawn mower and other small tire applications. However for my ZForce I carry a couple of cans of "Flat Fix" because if the puncture is not too big it should seal the tire as it gets inflated. Hopefully getting off the trails and back home. Thanks in advance of any reply.

Green slime didn't work for me and was a mess to deal with if you take the tire off. Can't use a regular plug until you get it all cleaned out too. Get a pug kit and a tube for nasty holes. You can tube a tire trailside. Take the tire off the machine, let out all the air or unscrew the valve, have your buddy run over the edge of it to pop the bead, put tube in, inflate, then enjoy the rest of your trip. Stubborn leaks at the bead? Use bead sealer. Auto stores stock it for tire shops but you have to ask for it. Most of the time it's in the back.

That's really good info, Cosmos, helpful. I think I'll get a couple of tubes & stick them in the machines....what pressures do you keep your tires at?

Tire below is after 50 miles of driving on it flat, still amazes me....I guess because they're so light they just don't destroy flat tires like a car, huh?

I run just under 10psi. My chuck doesn't start to show pressure until 10 so I stop when it wiggles. Don't forget to bring along a deep well socket and ratchet to get the tire off. They make extending ratchets, they pack small and have good leverage when all the way out.

10 PSI? I think they (dealer) has mine set at 30 or 35 PSI, I'll have to check. What jack do you use (I figure you've already done the legwork to find the best/cheapest?)

35 is max for setting the bead on the tire but for operation 15 is max I think. I run mine at 9 but an going to 10. I keep this little scissor jack in my box.

A pound make a lot of difference. On these you want between 8 & 12 depending on what you ride on.

I think I ran between 7and 8 PSI with the stock tires. I ride pretty rough terrain and not very fast. I only run about 3 in my 30s. They are stiff.

That's really surprising to me that such a small amount of air would make that much difference, I'm going to start at 10 & then maybe mess with it a little bit, go up & down & see what works best. Interesing....
