Fix For Radiator Heating Up Cab
« on: February 20, 2017, 05:54:29 PM »
Hi,
I just joined the forum and this is my first post.  Someone posted a fix for the cab being hot because of heat from the radiator using foam.  I'm wondering if I could use foil insulation like the reflective stuff you put in your windshield to keep your car cool?  Has anyone tried this?  It cheaper and easier to get than high-density foam.  Thanks in advance for your help.

The heat flows up and over the firewall through the dash. The memory foam filled and formed to all the odd creases and around some control boxes. I don't see how you would ever get a sheet of plastic to do that...or what you could stick it to keep it in place. Also remember, you have to seal that opening all the way to the fenders and that means around the role cage bars..and you can't even see them to stuff the foam..just by feel. Even after all that I still get a little in from...somewhere.

Got it... Just don't feel comfortable with high-density foam near a source of heat.  The wife got a roll of the foil insulation for our camper for about $20.  I'm thinking of piecing the insulation together and hot gluing it to the dash wall.  I would probably use the HD foam in the hidden spots I can't get the insulation in.  I used to work on airplanes for a living I have some experiencing with putting stuff in places where I can't actually see.   :D

Haphazardly stuffed the insulation foil in behind the dash and took the ZForce for a 30+ mile spin yesterday.  The temps were in the low 40s to low 60s and the temp stayed pleasant all day.  Felt a little bit of heat but nothing like before.  I think the insulation foil will work.  Now that I know it works I will cut and precisely install more insulation.  Will post pics when I'm done.

That's great. The last place I feel heat coming in from the front is through that big honk'n hole they have for the steering shaft and other stuff. Open to any ideas on blocking that. Thinking about some kind of custom rubber boot-type shield.... thing.

NMK, I think I have a solution for that. Its called a "witches cap" made for roofing. I'll post a pic when I get home.
You may have seen these on a roof top with a piece of pvc vent coming out of it.

I work for Fastenal, and we sell these.  I think it would do the trick.flexible, waterproof, can be sealed and cut to fit.

I took a look at it yesterday and because of all the stuff and the column's angle through there I decided a capped three-sided deflector "may" do the trick and so I made one from some extra black ABS I had. Didn't take any pics but it works out to be 3"s wide, 2.5"s deep and 4"s long with a angles flange on the right side, No flange on the left because of the frame and master cylinder. I also had to form an angles track through it on the left side because of a frame piece. Just set in place and drilled a couple of holes for push-pins for easy removal if needed. Should keep most of it out...we'll see.
