Engine oil pressure
« on: August 29, 2022, 11:29:08 AM »
HI all,
As I'm finally able to start putting miles on my machine I'm noticing that the oil pressure light will tend to flash a couple of times while riding.  I ride some pretty windy wooded trails on county forest land that are basically gravel with some sand.  Generally flat.  Riding speeds average 25-45 MPH.  I noticed the light will sometimes flicker as I slow to enter a tight corner and drop my speed,  As I come out of the corner and get back on the gas the light stops flickering. it generally does not do it on straight stops and starts but has if I come off of high speed to a sudden stop.  Naturally, I checked my oil and I'm at the correct level.  I'm wondering if sloshing is causing a pressure issue and if I should be running a slightly fuller case maybe run it a little higher than the top point on the stick or could I be having a pressure switch issue?

Of course we recommend actually testing the oil pressure but there has been way more pressure switch failures then actual low oil pressure. Reminiscent of the old days of most all fan switches going bad. Mine never did...one of the lucky-ones I guess. Now with all that said there have been some other situations that were a problem such as pressure relief valves and even plugged oil coolers.

No Warranty. purchased used.  It's a 2020 with 1300 miles.  Did a search on a forum on facebook.  looks pretty common. I'll start with the gauge and see what I'm actually getting for oil pressure.  I assumed it it would put the computer in limp mode if it showed no oil pressure because it was disconnected to get an actual analogue gouge connected.

No limp mode on oil pressure.

There are so many posts on this, all over the internet but very few post the fix.  I see a few replaced sending units and a few saying they have good pressure on the gauge but at times it does drop to 0 on the gouge but no follow up on the fix.

I haven't seen any that say it drops to zero on the gauge, but if that were true, then the pump is likely sucking air which implies low oil. Most of the time it is a faulty oil pressure switch or bad electrical connection.

Do you have a URL to an example of a post as you described?

I'd have to do some digging.  I read so many posts.  Not sure if it was here on FB or youtube video.  I'll check around.

Mines done this since new. I. Installed a digital oil pressure Guage and it definitely will drop to zero when coming to a stop intermittently. Never was able to resolve. I. Have great pressure when idling and cruising around. I did replace the pressure relief valve with no luck on fixing the problem

Thanks for the reply.  What machine do you have and how many miles are on it.? 0 Pressure is not good for long term engine longevity. I now have over 1700 miles on mine.    I have found that if I run at the top of the cross hatch marks on the dipstick it happens much less often but it still does happen, especially on a quick stop or very tight twisty turns.  I hate seeing it flash on the screen.

Makes me think the pickup tube or port isn't set to the lowest area of the sump..and hard stops sling the oil away from that area leaving it open to air...a little less when very full or a bit overfilled. Hard to envision anyone making something like that. Sure would like to see someone open one of these that does this up and inspect for a reason. I have not had it happen.

Oil screen?
Maybe. Odd that no one with this problem has ever come back and said it was just the screen though. Worth checking for sure.

Oil screen?
My side cover was off at the dealership to replace the starter and double starter gears. The case was drained for that.  I would assume they would have cleaned the screen when they put it all back together .  Although I don't exactly know where the screen is but he manual says the 800 screen is not serviceable but the 500 is during an oil change.

You said you replaced the pressure relief valve? Is yours an 800 and what year please. Mine has low oil pressure all the time now. I'm suspecting that valve. Until the service manual I ordered shows up I was just wondering if you can get to that valve from outside the case with the engine in the buggy.
