EBC Brake Pads for the SXSs
« on: December 31, 2016, 03:54:40 PM »
For anyone interested, I went on a waiting list with FortNine, a Canadian company, to be notified when they got back in stock EBC pads for the rear of my Z800. Its almost been a year but I just got notified they were back in stock. At 44.99 per set...and you will need two sets, they are not cheap...but being only about two-bucks higher then the CFM upgraded Siintered sets (@42.59) for the best in the market...and probably not free shipping to the US..I'll still take them. Maybe you an find them cheaper somewhere else. Here the link to FortNine and the application chart for the CFMs. The fronts are in there too.

Thanks bezerk1. I actually did find them on their site by the part number and...they are $14 per set cheaper! So..did they improve your braking? The new pads I put up front allow me to lock-up the front but the factory pads on back still feel like I have little friction and won't slide the rears. I'm hoping a better pad will fix that. I just ordered the EBC's from perfectbrakes.com.

For those that need the part numbers:

The Rears both part numbers are: FA651X (Need 2 sets the same)
The front Left is FA135X, and the Front Right is FA165X

It's hard to say if the pads made a difference on the rear.  Maybe there was a slight improvement.  I do have a set of EBC's for the front which will hopefully improve the braking.

I'll change them out and see. The improvement on the front was enough to give me hope...lol

Have you ever thought about relocating the pivot point on the master cylinder push rod for more leverage?  I haven't looked to see if its possible.  Just something to think about.

Thought about it a while back when I was convinced the ratioing was off. Took a quick look once and decided it would be easier to adapt a larger master cylinder but...if this still leaves me with questionable brakes I'll be...revisiting the master cylinder...lol

What about upgrading the callipers to ones with more pistons

I dont think that MORE pistons would be needed.  But maybe LARGER pistons.
I can imagine a world completely at peace.  A world where there are no weapons, no war, and no violence at all.  And I can imagine us taking over that world because they would never expect it.

The std one's only have one piston two would be better, I think one large piston would be difficult on a such a small calliper, even mountain bike's have 2 or 4 and even 6 pot callipers. I have four pot's on my mountain bike.

They do have a 2-piston caliper on front and a 1-piston caliper on the rear. Far as I understand it, you need to increase the friction level between the rotor and the pad to gain braking reaction. That can be done with a different pad material as I am finding out.. or.. increasing the force the master and slave cylinder exerts on the pad. That requires either more pressure from the master which means a larger master piston or a change in peddle ratio.. or an increase of pressure surface area applied to the pad which will require either more or larger pistons.

I thought mine had the same calliper front and rear, I will have a closer look next time. larger surface area is on thing you gain with 4 or 6 pot callipers as they tend to be longer in there construction, back when I used to ride more often there was 2 different types of pad available sintered and standard, I always used the sintered one's

Yep, still is...and now in some cases we can get a special long-life pad as in the EBC's R types. The rest including the upgraded CFM factory pads are the sintered-type.

Regarding the callipers, I was thinking about opposing cylinder callipers rather than the single sided one's fitted. If I were looking to improve my brakes I would look to motorcycle callipers probably 4 pots on the front and proper 2 pots on the rear, back in my early years and tuning cars it was always desirable to have apposing pistons with the body made in one piece for no flex and a hard pedal as far as I know is a good thing to have, not only are the standard one's very basic that design will flex like a pig which is no good if you want powerful brakes (just my thoughts)

Great direction to take..especially for the serious rider. For me I'm not sure I would spend that kind on money on one of these and for what I need though. My brakes are acceptable for my use now and if these new EBC pads...which just came yesterday, increase the stopping power.. even 15%, I will move on to other concerns and projects.
