CVT normal Temperature
« on: August 07, 2019, 10:21:30 AM »
Question: What would the normal running temperature of the CVT be on a 2016 800 Trail,  say on 90-95 degree day? What would be the safe top end be?

It's going to depend on several things like primary clutch speed which has the air fins on it that moves the air through the system and how much load the belt is under...which makes heat. I try not to ride in 90+ degree temps because....well I just don't like it..:).. but for me in the high mountains doing normal (for me) trail riding in the mid 80s, the temps stay between about 150 and 170 until it either gets pushed a little harder or my CVT air filter starts restricting air flow. Once it start reaching 190 I kick-on my booster fan. 210 is a good high-end limit. Try to keep it below 190 but the cooler the better.

Thanks NMK. I have the CVT connected to to my particle separator with a temp. gauge. Last ride was about 50 miles the terrain was sand, sand hills and lots or rock climbing in around 80 degree temperatures. 147 was the highest I achieved so I think i'm ok. I agree with your hot weather statement. My summer riding is mostly mountain 75-80 degrees. Lot of the trails will leave the mountains and go to small towns and the temp. can easily be 95-100 degrees. Thanks for all your help on all these machines :)

Sounds like you are just fine. And because of your low CVT temps it re-assures me that when I do get my particle separator and tie it into both, all will be fine too. The thing that gets me on my system is the CVT filter...it will get so packed-up with dust and dirt sometimes in only 30 miles of road. Getting tired of that.

Any pics of how you tied them together?

I do have pictures just can't figure out how to up load. I used schedule 40 black pipe. It was fairly easy and to me looks good. The particle separator is unbelievable I installed a 4" canister filter after the separator to filter CVT and engine intake after the ride the filter was spotless and so was the main engine filter (Uni-filter) :D

Cool..got any side shots..so we can see how much above the roof line it is? That's about how I want to do mine but I want to "Y" or "T" off the bottom over to my stacks and elbow-in.

Jaco, taking my hat off and swinging it down low. Damn I have to do something just like what you have done. :D
Great work.
I found with my King Quad with temp gauge in the CVT case, it's about letting the motor whirl, whichever range you are in. My CVT got the hottest it ever would when going slow in low range and RPM's little above idle, which on that machine is 1350 RPM similar to a CF Moto SXS. The fan on the primary just doesn't move enough air to evacuate the heat of the CVT when below 3000 RPM or so.
And like NMK said, the plumbing has to be free breathing.

That looks nice. I need a little help understanding the engine intake tube and the CVT intake tube. Are they tied together in the main intake tube? I thought they were separate systems. I haven’t got that deep into it yet. If I’m wrong, how did you tie them together? Or am I missing something? Please excuse my ignorance. I’m new to this thing.

They are two completely different systems. Check NMKawierider posts he has full and complete step by step directions to alter each system. I would not done any of this without his help. :).

Jaco. Are you hard piped all way to the intake or do you still have a filter in the box?
