Cutting Holes in our EX's....
« on: May 27, 2016, 06:58:31 AM »
So, I copied & installed NMK's air prefilter & the sound deadener in the old opening in between the seats, to get rid of the noise. Found that now, with the new doors (Rodins); when it's warm outside there's a ton of hot air coming out of the seatbelt & Ebrake holes....so I looked where I could make a hole on the upper part of the box in back, and made a 3.5 inch hole there. You have to do this right where I put it if you're going to do it on that side, because the clutch/transmission intake is on that side, too, no drilling into that.

After I did it, we went for a short ride, most of the heat is gone, and if you put your hand by that hole while driving, a TON of hot air is coming out, this is good, methinks. I'm going to leave it as is for now, as it's not hot outside, but when it gets warmer, if I want more flow, I'll do the same thing on the other side. I do plan on installing adjustable vents on the hole, and doing the same thing in the cabin for heat when it's cold/er outside. A HEATED CF Moto 800 EX?  :)

Also....bought a set of jacks for the machines, they fit perfect in the front storage, see the pics below.

That's a good idea. One I had been kicking around because I have one of these grills left over from my first intake mod I was thinking of one on each side...maybe a little higher on the plastic if possible. It's a 3" though.

On the passenger side, you can put it pretty much anywhere, the reason I did it on this side first was because it has the exhaust pipe going past=more heat etc. My Wife said the air coming out of it was HOT, and I believe it. I know this relieved a lot of pressure/heat that was coming out of the console, along with a lot of dust, too.

I've done a similar thing to mine, I used 1mm perorated alloy disc to cover the hole

David, did you put one hole in it or two, and how did it change what you saw in the cabin?

You know what's strange is I don't get that hot air out of the console anywhere..or the dust. I wonder why? ...I remember when I had mine apart the first time I found the CVT's exhaust wasn't installed correctly. It wasn't in the mount-peg and was turned in a different direction.

Two hole's on each side and there will be a bigger hole in the centre when I get round to it, mine used to get so hot my wife thought her backside was going to catch fire ;D (hot ass)

surely thermal wrapping the header would help this as well.

On ours; until I let some of that air out, it really is like having a heater in the middle between the seats. There's a lot of hot air coming form the engine etc.

NMK, your clutch exhaust was pointed in the wrong direction, explain more please.....mine has this strange tube that comes out, wraps down & then goes backwards pointed to the rear of the machine. I looked at it & I do really think I might make a splittable tube for it, one that goes in one direction to outside, the other to a vent coming into the cabin.

Oh Rev, I see you have the rear storage box in yours !! I was curious how that fit with NMK's pre-filter into the bed. Now I know  ;)  It looks like it fits fine, with plenty of distance between the filter and the box. You guys continue to provide a wealth of info for the CF Moto community, and I'm sure years from now we can all refer new owners back to these threads to give them all they need to improving their rides.

That pipe is clamped by the cover and a plastic pin fits into a receiver on the other. Mine was not in the receiver and the clamp was left loose so it had rotated some as it laid down. Not much but I think like the fan on the other side, it is supposed to blow air across the O2 sensors and exhaust pipes and if you think about it and imagine looking down on it, the flow from both together makes it flow in a clock-wise rotation. Not sure in there's any significance to that but it is interesting.

I did it that way because I needed to set a 4-gallon flat pac between my box and bed and as long as it was less then 3"s tall, it would stay inside that indented area...and not require a lot of modification from my first grilled intake system.

Thx NMK ! My plan was to use my existing pair of 2g Rotopax on either side of the SuperATV storage box. That gives me 4g of fuel flanking the box, as well as leaves that area behind the box completely open and accessible for easy maintenance.

Yesterday, we rode some, and dust wise, there was almost none. I think an absolute ton of dust was coming through the console before, this knocked it down a pile...and got rid of a ridiculous amount of heat.

And Walkin', on that box in the back, it stays real warm inside because the deck in the back is warm, so what I'm going to do is get a couple/few strips of Teflon & attach them to the bottom of the box, in summer, so it stays cool. I think if air is allowed to get in between the box & the deck it'll work out ok, but right now, my Wife had a plastic container in the back on the bottom with some food in it, turkey & noodles of some kind, she said they were "nice and warm!"

Wow..had no idea the deck got that warm. Guess I never checked. On my box, I didn't want to mar-up the deck but wanted it to dry under it after washing so I glued a piece of outdoor carpet on the bottom. Never noticed any heat inside the box.
