Carrier shaft and drive shaft play
« on: November 08, 2025, 12:06:10 PM »
I have a 2015 ZForce 800 that I bought used it’s started making a clunking noise in the drive line area. When I got the machine jacked up and checked for play in the u joints they seemed fine and so did the carrier bearing. I did notice some play between the carriers shaft and the female end of the drive shafts on both sides so I ordered new drive lines. The new ones have the same play in them. I don’t know how much play if at all there should be or if I should replace the shaft also. I can’t fine any previous  postings about this being a problem can anybody help me out here?

Well, let me tell you that sense brand spanking new my 2015 ZForce 800 has had so much play in the splines that in certain situations it is off enough under power that it actually "whips" and vibrates out of balance. When it does this I just back off the throttle taking pressure off them allowing them to re-center enough not to whip. They all are loose as a goose. My plan is/was that when it got bad enough or I needed to replace either u-joints or the carrier bearings, I was going to tale the complete unit down to my local driveline shop and have one custom made...with all the best stuff.  However so far it hasn't got any worse and nothing has warn-out...yet. But when it does.. it will get a custom new one...made in America.

Now for you, historically the carrier bearings fail before the u-joints and they don't easily show that they are shot so put it in neutral and look very close while rotating and moving it side-to-side.

Thanks for the reply. I did jack it up on stands and check for play in the u joints and the carrier bearing. I didn’t find any play in the u joints or the carrier bearing but lots of slop in the shaft between the two front drive lines. I pulled the drive lines and the carrier bearing out and like I said there’s all sorts of movement on the shaft but I get the same amount of slop with new parts from CF Moto. Going to see if I can return these parts and check on getting drivelines and new carrier bearing built with tighter tolerances. Will let u know what I find.
