Bigger tires or lift
« on: August 11, 2020, 01:11:21 PM »
What would be better?  1.5 " lift or going up two sizes on the tires.   Currently have the lift installed and tires on the way.  Thinking about removing the lift and just using bigger tires.  I know I could run both but it is not what I am asking.
Thoughts?

JMO but it would depend on weather it was an EX or trail. Lifts on trails is never a great idea where 1.5-2" on an EX isn't so bad. Larger tires means more unsprung weight and rotational mass which in either machine means clutch adjustments so..tires first then if really necessary do the lift.

I say both with spacers for stability.  Lighten suspension for a softer ride.  Trails ride rough.

End of the day I ended up running all three, 1.5 spacers, 1.5 lift and up two sizes in tires.  Springs have just enough pre-load to keep springs in place when unloaded.  Still playing with the shock adjustments.

A friend of mine came by to visit in his ranger, said he got new tires and I was looking at them, they are 26" also but looked taller than mine so I got out the tape measure and mine only measure 24"! I pumped the pressure up to 25psi and they still were only 25" tall. Helps explain why my speedometer is about 20% fast. Not all the fault of the tire but contributes 10%

Don't forget that tires have to be measured off the vehicle or across the center access from front to back, not from floor to the top..and from the center of the tire not the outside edge. One will find that most tires when mounted to the manufacturer's prescribed width wheel and at the listed operating pressure will be very close to what they say. For example, the pics below are of one 26" tire on my Brute Force. The 27s on my Z show as close to 27s when measured this way.
