Big oil leak
« on: August 08, 2021, 02:46:19 PM »
Just about to turn 600 miles and it decided to start puking oil from what looks like the seem between case halves. I’ve seen that this isn’t uncommon. Should be covered still but I gotta know. Any chance tightening the bolts would help? I’ve snugged them up already without any apparent change. Motors getting torn down isn’t it

Seems to be more common on the 2018s and newer...case oil leaks that is. The parts breakdown on the 2021s shows a gasket #25 but no part number. Usually this means it was added later...so maybe they started using only RTV but that couldn't hack it.

That would make sense. Guess I’ll be calling the dealer when they open Tuesday. Starting to wonder if this machine wasn’t the best choice

So I slowed down a minute (ADHD HAHA) and thought about some things. All my engine issues, IE oil in airbox, this new case leak, and the random uphill sputter which seems to be heat related (and that's reaching for potential causes since it seems to be the only common denominator), as we all know are possible symptoms of excessive blow by/ low compression. Since I had been so on top of maintenance to this point I Didn't give that any thought originally. I remembered that I didn't put a Uni filter in straight away as they were out of stock. I ordered it and rode the machine a couple weeks before it came in. When I changed it over of course the factory filter was dirty but I remember now inspecting the intake past the filter up to the throttle body and there was a decent amount of fine particle dust completely coating the tube. I cleaned that out and moved on thinking how I was glad I didn't wait any longer. factory filter really is more or less useless.
So I have now dropped the machine off at the dealer explaining this to them and they're looking at it today to diag for themselves obviously but already told me they're most likely going to push for a new engine. Predicted around 2 weeks time. Just about to turn 600 miles too, not bad longevity huh. I'm still in disbelief that the OEM filter is so bad it can let enough crap through to ruin an engine that quick. Insane they don't loose more. Of course I am still assuming just based on my mechanical background. Just didn't think at first it could've been that bad so fast. Pre mature wear sure but beyond spec like this. The old hard start issue however does seem it was simply the oil soaked filter from the blow by (allegedly) as its been starting perfectly fine since making sure it stays, well not dry but properly oiled with uni oil not motor oil.

Make sure you change out that crap filter first thing. With any luck your dealer will have it in stock and you can do it before it even comes off the trailer. I'm really starting to lean toward that being the original cause of all this as I had to order it and wait. It only had 10 or so hours on the engine if I remember right when I changed it too. It was at least before the first oil change. The dusty coating on the tubing to the throttle body was a bit alarming to me and its the only common denominator for the symptoms other than of course simply manufacturing defect but that seems less likely. I can't believe CFMoto is still using these shit filters. Also since were on the topic you should really look into relocating your intake. I just replaced the upper tube with 2" pvc and ran it thru the perforated panel between the seats then closed that panel off with some aluminum heat reflective tape. I originally had a really cheap filter on that but found a decent prefilter online that works much better. My airbox is so much cleaner now and its not loud like some people say either. Not sure why unless its just because I kept it the same height as stock.

I got the 2" traditional snorkel guard. super tight fit. I ended up sanding it and the pvc coupling down some to make it a little easier to fit together. Enjoy the ride man, their pretty damn fun considering the price. My 800 trail has no problem hanging with the comparable rzr my buddy bought. Same model year too, he was a little upset when we swapped machines actually lol. Now that I've done the dr pulley sliders and reclocked I can't wait to line up with him again, not say anything and dust him lol. The look on his face should be worth it.

Thanks man, I seem to have pretty good luck with this dealer for the most part. They just seem to be a little out of the loop sometimes as far as having knowledge of some of these common problems. They've apparently never seen this oil leak for example. I get that its a small percentage that it happens too but the service writer hadn't even heard of it. At least the owner had heard of it. Didn't know much about intake relocations either apparently no-one around my area is doing them for some reason. So needless to say I question their knowledge on some things since I've learned about a lot of these things in the last year just owning one never mind being a dealer. The service in the end has been really good though so I guess that's the important part. The old school mechanic in me has concerns is all I guess, but then again I'm not talking to the techs directly either. Just the counter people and owner so there's that. I don't want to bash the brand, shit happens and it seems I'm the lucky recipient. I had an issue with my Harley early on too. Rear pulley for belt drive wasn't torqued properly evidently and all the bolts loosened and broke off leaving me needing a new wheel and pulley. Under warranty luckily. Boy I talk a lot, sorry lol

I've been waiting exactly 30-Days for a new engine under warranty. I just today, talked to CFMOTO USA, and they have no engines in stock in the USA, and NO ETA on when they will see new motors.
Everything from main ports in China that were shut down to shipping container shortages, to container ships waiting to be un loaded due to slow downs at U.S. Ports, and railways jammed up, and a lack of manpower as tens of thousands of jobs go un-filled.
I'm hoping to have my new machine with only 21 miles on it back by October. I have a major, one month trip with my new machine planned for the end of October and into November.
I'm in business for myself, and I too rely on engines, and parts from overseas, and I too am experiencing major slow downs, and there isn't a damn thing I can do about it.

Looks good man. Change that filter like yesterday! Look into rerouting sooner than later too. Other than that most things are preference as far as I see.
