Belt Alignment Procedure
« on: May 11, 2021, 06:58:53 PM »
Hello, my unit has been braking belts since brand new!... I have tried all brands (Ultimax, Gates, and OEM), and all of them have failed.  Right now I bought EPI Severe Duty belts and hope them to last longer.. My problem is that the braking was happening with less and less running time, so, I decided that instead of replacing belts I would bring my unit to the dealership and let them find what was wrong... After a very long period of time, they returned me the unit, with brand new: wet clutch, primary and secondary clutches, plus a brand new OEM belt... the unit broke the belt with less than 200km of use!...

So, right now I am trying to do a forensics analysis of what is happening, and after dissembling the clutch we found severe wear on several components... meaning, I need to replace again a lot of pieces.

Then, I've been trying to find information on how and what to check to get the proper belt alignment between the pulleys, If someone has some advice on this particular procedure, please, please, give me some advice.

The 800s don't use anything to align the clutches as they are aligned with just what it has. Check for wear on the sheaves, excessive heat and above all, check that cover bearing...they come with almost no grease and fail fast and when they do, that primary shaft will become out of alignment...and will wear the inner bearing...and the wet clutch shoes.

I'm sorry you had a dealer/shop that just threw expensive parts at the problem instead of trying to understand what's wrong and fix it properly.
The advice to make sure the air plumbing to the CVT is unrestricted, is excellent. The most common cause of CVT belt failure is overheating. Odd as it may seem, the belt actually gets hotter when the machine is ridden slowly than it does in high RPM / high load conditions! I found this out when I installed a belt box temp gauge on my King Quad.
This is because the fan, consisting of blades on the inner front CVT plate, is inefficient at moving air at slower motor speeds and the belt at full reduction dissipates a lot of heat from belt scrub. But if you have debris or a mouse nest in the plumbing you have a smoking gun right there. Or rather a smoking belt.
And you won't find better advice than NMK gives you, check that bearing and grease it. :)
BTW you don't have a small tubing, lots of corners snorkeled intake, do you?
