I need to tap the collective wisdom of this forum.

I've been considering taking longer trips in the Z and got to thinking about the need for carrying supplemental fuel. I have a storage box taking up the bulk of the trunk space so that space isn't available. I could put it on top of the box, but then access to the box would be made difficult.

I've been thinking that a hitch mount arrangement with a fuel pack bracket might be a good solution but I haven't found anything like that on the net. I may have to build one if an easier alternative  isn't found.

I'm interested in what kinds of ideas and solutions people have come up with to date for carrying fuel packs on their Z.

My old style Kolpin flat pack fits nicely in front of my rear storage box that's a trailer tongue box. It's low enough I can open the box lid and it stays up.

I had originally positioned my box so I could place my 3 & 4 gallon flat pacs in like Glenlivet but the new stacks takes that off the table. Then I thought I would get a general mount from Roto Pax and mount it to the cage bar above the box...but the new rear windshield took that off the table. I then thought about mounting it to the lid of the storage box but experience has taught that the constant bouncing up and down rips the latches off the lid when extra weight is added... so that's off the table. There is room to put my two-1-gallon flat packs behind or beside the trunk if needed. But for me 7.5 gallons is over 150 miles and more then I will ever normally need so I quit worrying about it. A hitch mount sounds pretty good. Some build a rack for the front and mount then up there...which for balance wouldn't be a bad idea.

Take a look at these pictures that Dragonmac posted a few months ago, his rack could be used for anything that fits.
