another accessory power Q
« on: April 07, 2022, 10:32:41 AM »
Hi All,
I'm new here, just picked up a 2020 ZF 800 EX. Previous owner wired 2 spot lights and 2 whips to a couple of switches and used an external battery to power it.  I have been looking at the older posts trying to figure out the best way to use the main harness and get key on power.  I have 3 questions.  1. If I use the accessory plug for key on power, can I tie into the pig tail rather than the wire going to the fuse box?  it's easier to get to because it's longer. 2. if I use that positive leg to power the switch, should I use the negative leg from the same accessory pigtail or can I just make a new ground to the frame somewhere?  3. If I find a different ground, will I still be protected by the 10A fuse that the accessory plug uses or will I need to add a fuse?

Thank you
John

First..clarify what you mean by "Pig Tail". You do not have to use the acc plug's common, you can use any or the frame itself, as long as it gets back to the negative side of the battery...and yes it will still be protected by the 10 amp fuse.

when I say pigtail, I'm talking about the side of the factory plug that connects to the accessory plug outlet on the passenger side of the buggy.  I can pull that out where the front storage box rests and I can work on it much more easily to get a quality solder.  The other side of the factory plug is too short and too hard to work on under the dash.

Ok, yeah that's fine. That's where I have most of my extras getting their power.

Perfect.  Thank you.  I added 2 blank wires while I was soldering to have easier access later.
