Air intake grill
« on: June 20, 2019, 04:11:28 PM »
Is it held on by plastic push pins?  Before I destroy something, what's the simplest way to remove them?  The pre-filter on mine has not been cleaned and I'm looking into foam options.....
Thanks.

Yes it is held on by pins.  There is a proper tool to remove them but I've gotten good at using a pair of sidecutters to carefully grab the centre on the flat sides and pop it out without damage.

Thanks.  Probably a good idea to have some spares on hand no matter what.....

I use 3 stage push rivets by Bolt, 8MM, in place of the factory pin. You can order off amazon 10 pack for about $6.00. To remove just push the center pin through and remove the rivet, then push the center pin back the other way to reset for reinstall. Also I fabricated a pre-filter from a blank 12 x 24 x 3/8" black ppi 30 uni filter off amazon. Use hot melt glue to seam together, foam filter oil,  and slipped over the intake neck.  I spin the filter around 180 degree after a ride or if its really dusty. Clean with mineral spirits, reoil, reinstall. I have a z500 and it works for me keeping my primary filter cleaner longer.

I ordered 100 of the black plastic pushpins off of eBay for six dollars Post paid. They are 8 mm which is what they recommend.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I figured there had to be some options besides the dealer. I’ll look into a removal tool and filter options as well.
