2023 zForce 800 Trail
« on: February 19, 2023, 06:38:24 PM »
THe new Trail unit does not have a parking brake.  Putting the unit in Park, is basically the brake.  There is an issue if you park on a hill and the weight of the unit is resting on the transmission in Park.  You cannot shift it out of Park without rocking the unit or taking the weight off.  I had to winch to a tree to relieve the pressure off the gear selector to shift out of Park.

Deleting the e-brake is ...well I'm just going to say it...the stupidest thing they could do. The "Park" is only good for flat, level surfaces..which most of us are NEVER on. And it's prone to breaking the paw even if used in transporting. I never use it. Most other manufacturers don't even have a Park position for those very reasons. Wonder how long it will be before they recall all and have an e-brake kit installed. My friend I ride with installed an aftermarket kit on his wildcat trail..I guess that's another one that has a Park and no e-brake as well. Some kind of thing that uses the foot brake. At least there are kits out there.

Never use the transmission parking brake when transporting, you can cause serious mechnical problems by doing so.  They flat say in the owners manual that this is a no-no.
I don't know about everyone else but I would only park and get out of or off my ride on a fairly level spot unless it was an emergency then I think I would look for something to block my tires. And to answer your thought I ride in Idaho, and we are not exactly flat around here.
Just my two cents.

Hmmm.  So why have a Park in the transmission if it is only viable for parking on flat ground?  Maybe I am missing something.  Also seems like the dealer should have told me about not placing the unit in Park when transporting.

From your own owner's manual, page 189...

Thank you.  Obviously I did not read the manual before the intial transport home.

On the other statement, why even have a Park in the transmission if it is only used on flat ground??

That's a good question. The parking brake moves a piece called a parking paw or "Lever" into a lock on the bevel or counter shaft to it can not turn but all the weight or force from the unit trying roll tries to rotate that shaft and thus all that is against that paw. It doesn't take much to cause enough resistance between the two parts to make it harder to slip out then the shifter parts can provide without damaging something. Thus the "rocking" to relieve some of that force..at least enough so it will move without damaging something. Now as it wears-in the smoother the two parts that lock together get and the easier they will slip apart...but that will take..forever. A good synthetic gear oil will help.
This is what one of the old ones looks like. They bind on what looks like teeth. They can break there or more often on the shaft "ring" on the other end during transport.

I was appalled when I learned they removed the park brake. One of the dealers should see if 2022 calipers will fit on 2023. If so, they could use 2022 parts to make a kit to add park brake.

I agree. The e/parking brake is essential for all rigs. Basics...

Until someone comes up with an aftermarket fix for this I went to Harbor Freight and purchased a rubber Haul Master wheek chock ($7.99) and made my own.  Tied a rope onto it and place it where I either back up to it or drive up to it.  Haven't had the need to use it yet and may not have to  since I ride with the club and can always get someone to place it if necessary.  I did try it out in the pasture and didn't have a problem putting the chock in the right place (front or rear tire); pain in the ass though.
However I do agree that Cfmoto screwed-the-pooch on this one.

A friend I ride with bought one like this..not this one..for his Wildcat Trail..which also didn't have a parking brake. Might have to do some fab-work but something like this is better then nothing...I think.

Looks like it might work with, as you say a little fab work.
I ordered the other type couldn't get it to work without a lot of modification and really no place to mount it.

WOW. Talk about a safety issue as i see it.That just blows my mind them doing that.I always use my emergency brake.
And like smitty42 i live in Idaho and we have plenty of mountains .
I live in Weiser and am still riding the Payette Forest area.Beautiful
country.
I wonder if this might turn into a recall issue.

When all the warranty work starts coming in on broken PARK-related parts and the complaints from people loosing their machines off mountains...I'll bet there will be :)

Our club has ridden a lot of the trails out of Mann Creek Reservior.  Really great riding.  There is one 50" only trail ride off FS573 that makes you think. End up eventually going up to Sturgill Peak Lookout then back to the camprooud on the west side of the reservior; about a 60 mile ride.
