2022 800 with extremely high oil consumption
« on: August 13, 2024, 02:08:50 PM »
have a 2022 800 that has 2000 miles. started smoking and taken to dealer . they did compression test and stated that was fine and suggsted to replace the oil seals. that was done and they stated that would fix the issue. First ride and was still continuing to smoke. Drove just over 10 miles and stopped to check oil level. Barely any showing on dipstick. added oil till full and returned to parking lot. checked oil again and was barely registered on dip stick. Dealer states entire top end needs rebuilt to cure the problem. Engine runs like a watch, just smokes worse now than before they worked on it. What would be the cause for this ?

There is only two places for oil to go. Leakage outside the engine..which you should be able to see on the floor or ground..or all over the case somewhere. Or burned- as in bad rings or valve seals. With bad rings it can still have good compression but oil can still get by and burned in the cylinder. Check the plugs-if that are not white or only slightly gray or tan, rather dark and oily, then it either has bad rings or bad valve seal at least on the intake side..which wouldn't be the first valve seals to wear out. If the plugs are normal-looking then it indicates it has either very bad exhaust valve seals or there is a breach into the an oil galley and porting to the exaust..likely a head gasket or cracked head issue. Just FYI, people that have continued to run the OE paper air filter on their 800s and 500s have averaged less then 1200 miles of dusty condition riding before their top end needed rebuilt. Those that have but rude in less dusty conditions average around 2000 miles. Also burning oil contaminates the O2 sensors and when it does it enough the MIL or Check engine light will come on. It also destroys and plugs-up the catalytic converter on the OE muffler. Yours sounds like she's going through a lot of oil.

dealer charged 1400 to compression check and change valve seals, said that was the cure. smokes worse now and burned nearly 3 quarts in 10 miles.... no mosquitos for miles..... now he states it will cost 2400 to rebuild top end. no codes or indications of why it just started.

Bummer. Sounds like this dealer...shouldn't have a service department. A simple leak-down test would have told him what's going on.

I notice the air box is horribly designed and more of a dirt catcher then an air box. The rubber hoses on the intake in between vibrate loose and if there loose it is sucking in dirt like no tomorrow. I put 450 miles on it and I couldn't believe how much crap was in the oil filter. So I did a relocation of the air box swapped out the rubber for silicone which seal 10 times better.
For your engine burning oil the piston walls are scored. The good news is these engines are sleeved so they can be fixed.
My brother has my old 1986 suzuki 230 quad sport and is on it's 3rd piston and sleeve.

I had the same issues then the engine pretty much blew up. Dealer says it will need to be replaced. Not at all happy with Moto at this point.
I will be replacing motor and modifying air intake, or selling and buy a polaris.
Good luck going forward and interested to hear how things go.
