2021 Zforce 800 not cranking after long rides
« on: July 15, 2022, 07:00:58 AM »
Hi! 2021 Zforce 800 trail and I'm at a lost with this. After a 4 hours+ ride it will not start the next day. Fuel pump and lights all working, but no solenoid click, I've tried to jump start it with and and also used a battery charger and it would not start or solenoid click. Then if I pulled in and out some fuses in the fuse box (without replacing them with new ones), I do finally hear the click of the solenoid when trying to start  and after a couple of starting try it will finally start and not give me this problem and always start even after a couple of days unless I do another 4+ hours ride.  It doesn't seem to to matter which fuse I pull out/put back in, it just seem to reset the electrical and the solenoid is cranking up again and after another 30 sec it will start (2-3 start try) Already changed the start relay fuse. Battery is saying 12.0v when key turned on and 14.3 when running.

12v at battery is marginal voltage.  should sit at about 12.8V.  Not sure 12 is enough.  when loaded to turn a starter, a good battery will drop to about 11.9 V and rebound immediately.  Have you checked to be sure your battery will take a full charge?

Yeah should be between 12.4 and 12.8..ish just sitting there. 14+ is normal for charging. Have the battery load tested and check for any voltage drop through the main fuse.

After changing the battery (it was needed anyway) it still will not start the next day after an hour or so ride and battery is at 12.7, no clicking and no turnover. Instead of playing with the fuses until it start again and be ok until the next long ride, I will leave it as is and call the dealership and have them tow it in, hopefully they will pinpoint what's wrong

If the solenoid doesn't click, then the signal wire to the solenoid is likely not being energized. You can check that with a meter. You can test the solenoid by jumping power to the signal post.

The fuse resetting is a distraction. Instead, I would look at the ignition switch and two starter relays to find out where the voltage is not getting through.

Found it! it is the fuse box or the connections to the fuse box, i just stuck my hand under it and shook the cables a little and it started right up. Still under warranty, the mechanic will test and fix/replace if needed
thx all for the tips!

Chalk another one up to those fine Chinese electrical components....

In the '60's and '70's it was the British motorcycle industry's electrics that earned great scorn. So much that Lucas electric's were nicknamed 'Prince of Darkness'. Has the mantle been passed? :)
For a nation to believe it can tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and believing he can raise himself by pulling on the handle - Winston Churchill
